Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Otto is an approximately 4 year old harlequin male. Poor Otto was picked up by animal control as he was found tied to a street post during one of the winter storms in January. Otto is good around other dogs of both genders. He is resides with two Cane Corso Mastiffs and three Great Danes. He is fine with all. He is unknown with cats. Otto is a wonderful guy and a very loving Dane. Otto is up to date with all current vaccinations, heartworm tested and is negative. He is crate trained and housebroken. He is wonderful with the foster home's children; however, because of an unknown history and medical conditions, Otto will not be placed with children under 12 years of age. Otto is believed to be a neglect case, as he was taken to a shelter with a huge pressure sore on his left back leg. His foster mom states that with antibiotics and a collagen skin dressing, the pressure sore is healing up nicely. It is believed that Otto may have Wobblers and/or Osteoarthritis. Otto will be neutered and radiographs will be done to determine a diagnosis. He does have a hard time getting around and does fall on occasion. For now, Otto is on holistic supplements and Previcox for pain management. He is real trooper and tries as hard as he can to get around and is successful, but becomes tired easily. Otto will not be available for adoption until he is neutered and receives proper treatment with the veterinarian's diagnosis. Otto would do well as an only dog or with another dog that is low key. He will not be placed in home with staircases as the only means to get in and outdoors. He does well with one or two steps, but that is his limit. It is best that he is placed in a quiet home with carpeting or runners so he has a better grip to walk. Otto tries his hardest and is motivated to get around, but his motivation must be monitored so he doesn't injure himself. Otto should be leashed and walked with a harness, not a collar, when outside for potty time to make sure he doesn't injure any other parts of his spinal area. He is wonderful in a car when given motivation and the proper skills getting him in and out of a car. He just loves to go for car rides!
Update 3/4/09 - Since Otto's stay at his foster home, he has been too see two veterinarians. He has had full blood work done twice, and a full thyroid panel. His blood work came back great. However, Otto is so riddled with arthritis and his spine and skeletal features from his back end down are to the point where treatment or surgery of any kind, would not do any good, it would actually make things worse. Otto is on natural supplements, liquid glucosamine and Deramaxx to ease the pain from the arthritis. His foster mom states that with everything combined, he is much more comfortable and is walking better. He has a special underbelly harness that is working greatly and he can get around a lot better without falling. Otto needs a home where he can live the rest of his life comfortably. It is best that Otto be placed in a home where the potential adopter is working part-time or a person that can be home with him. He is super sweet guy and deserves all the love in the world, as he gives it right back. He's a Special Needs Dane and he will need a very special, committed person to love him and give him the care that he needs.
