Jake lived with his previous owners and 2 other dogs, who were allowed inside, but he was forced to stay outside. He was given up after 11 years with his family because they were moving and didn't have the space for him any longer. He must not have been a very good guard dog because he NEVER barks and is super friendly! He is just the sweetest soul, and simply wants to be around people and be loved on. He is GREAT with our other GSD, and really good with our cat, too - he does like to follow her around and is always trying to get her to play, even though she couldn't care less about him!
While his eyes show that of a younger dog, his body does give away his age. He can get around just fine and doesn't seem to be in any pain, but his hips aren't super strong. He does have trouble getting in and out of the car by himself, but was perfectly content to lay down and enjoy the ride once inside. I think he'd make a great travel companion so long as a ramp was provided! Stairs would definitely be a challenge (he has not even attempted to get up our staircase) so a home with little or no steps would be best. He's a little husky at the moment, but after losing a little weight and eating a better diet his mobility definitely has potential to increase.
Overall I think Jake would be the perfect addition to a family looking for a quiet, gentle couch potato who is just looking for some love and company! He has had a couple of accidents overnight, but I think this will easily be corrected once he gets used to being an indoor dog full-time. He is very eager to please and is super food-motivated, and has already made improvements in just the few short days we've had him. This old dog definitely CAN learn new tricks! :)
