My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

6/24/09: Boone graduated today from his beginner training class. He did very well on his final exams and looked very handsome in his graduation cap!

6/14: Boone has always been a great dog, but he just keeps getting better. He loves to get his head scratched and his belly rubbed, and he loves cuddling up to his people. Boone isn’t shy anymore about seeking attention, but he still isn’t demanding. One of his favorite ways of cuddling people is putting his head down and rubbing against you while his hind end is still in the air wiggling all about. And he now gives wonderful kisses.

Boone has been attending training for the last several weeks and is a good student. He is doing well learning the basics – sit, down, stay, come, leave it. However, we’ve had trouble with “drop it”, but only because we can’t get him to “take it”, which is the step before drop it. We’ve presented him with all kinds of toys for “take it”, but he hasn’t been interested enough to take anything more than once (I guess he figures if we’re going to make him drop it why take it in the first place). But he does surrender items that he isn’t suppose to have – and still having some puppy in him he does occasionally get something he shouldn’t. He also knows “go to bed” – when he is told to go to bed he will settle down in the doggy bed in the bedroom. But he loves to be in the people bed, so he will sometimes sneak (or so he thinks) up onto the bed and very happily settle in. Being a good boy he will return to the doggy bed if he is told, but his happiness at being in the people bed makes it hard to send him away.

Boone was heartbroken at the loss of playmate Zach who was adopted at the May adoption day. The two were inseparable and were always wrestling and chasing after each other. Boone hasn’t had much luck getting that kind of playtime out of the resident dogs, though not for lack of trying. He’d be a great buddy dog for a dog with lots of playful energy – they could wear each other out and then settle in for a good nap.

4/5 - I’ve started to refer to Boone as the “gentle giant.” Though he really isn’t a giant. He is, however, a bit bigger than your average beagle and against his favorite playmate Zach, who weighs in at a whopping 14 pounds, he is a big boy. But he is absolutely a gentle boy. He loves getting attention and is never aggressive about seeking it. He will just sidle up to us and wait for attention, if not attention is forthcoming he will wander away. Sometimes in the midst of all the other dogs who are more aggressive about getting love, he can wind up with less than he deserves. But he is clearly so happy to be loved - he just eats it up – that I try to give special attention to him and seek him out if he doesn’t come looking for me.

But Boone is also a very active boy. He loves to play with the other dogs and is full of energy at play time. Boone loves to run and wrestle, and plays a serious game of tug o war. He doesn’t take advantage of his size when playing with his foster brothers – and generally allows Zach to get the better of him. Boone was great when Beasley, a new foster boy, came to our house last week, never being bossy with him and quickly made him a playmate. Boone also has a silly streak. One of the doggy bed covers lost its zipper to a chewer awhile back, but is being used nonetheless. Boone discovered that he could get under the cover and roll around in his own little cave. Zach will occasionally join him and they promptly start a wrestling match.

Boone does have a booming bark, but doesn’t use it at inappropriate times. He is generally a quiet dog, barking only when engaging in play or looking for a playmate. He isn’t food aggressive, but will try to get to a food bowl first if it is left unattended for just a few seconds. Boone walks nicely on a leash, but can be distracted by a potential playmate walking by. He is doing well with housetraining and will cry to be let out, but a couple of recent accidents keep me from declaring him housetrained
2/16: Boone just came to his foster home a few hours ago. After a short time exploring the house and yard, he and foster brother Zach quickly got down to the business of playing. Despite the difference in size – Zach is 14 pounds and Boone is 32 pounds, they are doing a great job chasing each other around and wrestling. In between playing, Boone is getting to know his new people, coming around for head scratches and pets. He is a very friendly and sweet boy. And handsome.
