Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Rufus is a 5 year old male neutered mastiff mix with a fawn colored coat and black mask and ears. Rufus weighs in at around 85 pounds and possesses an overall well put-together stocky build.
Rufus was taken to a dog pound due to his family expecting a new baby and with the additional reason being that he was too big for them to keep. The pound he was taken to does the "SAFER" temperament test on all their dogs and Rufus passed all parts of the test with flying colors. As a result, they were going to put him on their adoption floor when they discovered he was heartworm positive, which disqualified him as an adoptable dog at the pound. His only hope was to be accepted by a rescue group and when we were approached, we were luckily able to accept this wonderful, deserving, sweet and lovely dog into our program.
Now in foster care, Rufus has recently undergone heartworm treatment. He will require a few veterinary follow ups to monitor his health and finally complete a heartworm test to verify he is heartwom negative. He is doing great post-treatment and is very vibrant, has a great appetite, and is taking it nice and easy.
We have not had him long, but feel confident enough to rave on this dog, particularly about how awesome his overall personality is. He is great with people, great with dogs, and has no problems at all with cats. (Sorry, we have not observed him with children and do not have the opportunity to, but believe his manners would be very good around dog-social children.)
He is very in tune to his owner and wants to be by your side in the house. Outside, he tends to want to explore and so we want his adopter to have a fenced yard. He has shown us that he is housebroken as well. He is rusty on commands, but with food rewards, he wants to please.
Rufus has not attempted whatsoever to get on beds or couches and takes his naps on the floor. We suggest, therefore, that his adoptive home have a nice cushy floor-level bed ready for him to occupy and maybe after a while you can teach him (if you want and allow) - how to enjoy a bed or couch.
Rufus is a delightful dog. He only grew to the size that a purebred mastiff puppy would be - and this makes him uniquely cute! What a neat little dog!!!!!
