Winnie is an approx. 8 year-old female GSP. She was turned into a high kill shelter by her owner. He stated he didn’t need her anymore, and he didn’t care if they put her to sleep. We just can’t imagine why anyone would not want this sweet little girl. She was obviously used for breeding at one time, but she must have not been viewed as useful to her owner any longer.
Winnie’s foster mom says she is an angel. It was obvious she had never been inside a home, as everything was new to her at first. She has done so well on her housebreaking, and is learning how to play with toys. She gets along well with all of the other dogs in her foster home, and especially loves the energetic 11 month-old male. They wrestle and play together like puppies. She is also patient and loving with the children in her foster home.
Leash walking Winnie is easy. She prefers to stick close to her people, so she doesn’t pull or drag you around the neighborhood. She is somewhat of a velcro dog, choosing to follow her people around the house, wherever they go. It is as if she was so starved for human attention, she doesn’t want to let you out of her sight. She loves being near her people. Winnie has been doing well in her crate at night. At first, she fussed a bit, but she has grown accustomed to sleeping in her crate, and doesn’t make a peep.
Winnie’s foster mom has been working with her on basic commands. She is a fast learner and is eager to please. She would love to attend an obedience class with her new family. It is a wonderful way to bond with your new addition, and both humans and dog benefit from the lessons learned in class.
After entering foster care, Winnie was spayed. She also had a mammary tumor, which was removed and tested. Mammary tumors are quite common in middle-aged females that have been used for breeding. The tissue did test positive for cancer cells, but all indications are that it was completely contained and removed fully. No further treatment is necessary aside from regular follow-ups and monitoring by a vet. Our vets do not believe this will shorten Winnie’s life expectancy, and she has made an amazing recovery from the surgery. She seems to feel and act like a much younger dog.
Winnie is definitely cat sharp, so she would do best in a home without cats. But, since she does well with the dogs in her foster home, she would probably enjoy a canine companion in her new home. However, she would likely do well as an only dog also, since she seems to enjoy receiving tons of attention from her humans. Winnie is a lovely girl with an equally lovely temperament. She would be a wonderful addition to most any family.
