Here's what the humans have to say about me:
What is your name?
Orchid! My foster mom sometimes calls me Orchi-Porky-Pine, but, that’s because she’s weird. I prefer Orchid!
How old are you?
I’m about a year old! We think my birthday is in the spring of 2017!
What do you look like?
Gosh, I’m cute. I’m a beautiful silvery-fawn color. Some people call me a “lilac” pit bull. My eyes are a gorgeous light hazel. I’m on the smaller side when compared to what people usually think of a pit bull; I’m about 38 lbs! I’m SUPER soft. You know those fuzzy/soft blankets people love? I’m like that. But better…because..ya know..I’m a dog.
What do you like to eat?
I love food! My foster mom thinks I may have some food allergies, so she’s still working on finding the best kibble for my tummy. My food now is a herring and sweet potato mix, but that may change if my foster mom finds something better! She has been giving me a probiotic to help. She just sprinkles it on my food and I gobble it up! She says it’s pretty common for dogs with a coat like mine to be kind of sensitive with food.
What kind of personality do you have?
I’m a social butterfly and a class clown rolled up in one! I LOVE people and melt into whoever is giving me attention. I’m also pretty energetic and playful. The other morning, my foster mom couldn’t stop laughing at me (though she was frustrated) because I kept scurrying under the bed when she was trying to crate me. It was SUCH A FUN GAME, GUYS! I’m very outgoing. I want to be wherever the action is. My foster brother is more of a laid-back recluse; we’re exact opposites. I can also be a demanding and bossy girl, so I’ll need a family that keeps me in check. I would do best in a home with a family that gives me LOTS of lovins’, but also gives me structure and boundaries.
Describe your perfect day:
Food. Belly rubs. Puppy massages. Belly rubs. Belly rubs. Play time outside. Belly rubs. Puppy massages. Food. TADA!
What is your favorite toy?
Anything is a toy if you try hard enough. The shoe my foster mom left by the front door? Fair game! The leash I pulled off the hook on the wall? Yep; I’ll take that! In all seriousness, I like playing tug with a braided rope or chasing balls in the backyard! My foster mom is teaching me boundaries with what I can have and can’t have. She says I’m really responsive to her corrections, which is great! Now when I take her shoes, I at least stop and look at her with puppy dog eyes when she tells me to drop it. Before, I would just take off running! (I told you I’m a class clown…)
Do you know any tricks?
I can sit! Like I mentioned before, I can scurry under a bed in lightning speed! That’s a fun trick.
What scares you?
It has taken some time for me to get acclimated to living inside a home, but I love it so far! Some of the weird house sounds like a dishwasher, ice machine, or even the tv can be confusing. As I’m getting more comfortable in the home, I’m becoming less alarmed by those weird sounds.
Do you like cats?
Meh. I met a cat at my vet recently. I was a bit too hyper-focused on that feline. If you want the cat to live, my foster mom would prefer I not be in a home with cats.
Do you have any doggie best friends?
I’m getting there! I’ve been slow to acclimate into interactions with my foster siblings. I met my foster sister and did okay, but I was SO playful and over the top, my foster mom decided to give me more time to decompress and learn structure before letting me have free reign to play with her. I wasn’t mean or anything! I was just SO excited to play that I was pretty unruly and wacky. I spend a lot of time crated in the living room while my foster siblings get to explore the house. I also get some free time to roam part of the house while my foster brother is in another room behind a gate. This is helping me acclimate slowly into the pack. So far, I’m doing great!
If you could be anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I want to be belly-up, lounging in the sunshine on the lap of my best human friend.
How is your health?
I’m a healthy girl! I’ve been spayed and had a little growth removed from my toe! The growth was benign, which I guess means my foster mom wasn’t too worried about it. Like I said before, my foster mom is figuring out what food I might do best on…with the wrong food, I sometimes have a hard time with my…ahem…bowels. My foster mom thought I was having a hard time with potty training, but now she thinks it may be my food.
Who do you live with in your foster home and who is your closest companion?
I share a home with two human best friends, a 7 year old male pit bull who is basically a grumpy old man, and a 2 year old female pit bull that is about as meek as a mouse. My best friend is probably my foster mom!
Where do you hang out when you are home alone?
When my foster parents aren’t home, they put me in my crate in their guest room. I have already come so far with learning that the crate is a safe place! At first, I wasn’t a fan. I’m a quick learner and already walk into the crate on my own when my mom grabs a treat and tells me to!
Where do you sleep?
I sleep in my crate like a good girl. Don’t get me wrong, I’d probably LOVE to be in bed with one of my humans, but I also feel safe and secure in my crate.
What do you love about your foster family?
I love that they have been patient with me and are slowly acclimating me into their household, rather than just throwing me in. It’s helping teach me structure and boundaries and that I don’t get to just run the house. I would probably like to be the boss, but they’re helping me understand that I don’t always know best. What a buzzkill, huh?
What was life like before you were rescued by Even Chance and brought into the welcoming arms of your foster parents?
I was rescued by the ASPCA from a dog-fighting bust in another state when I was fairly young. I’m so lucky they saved me and took me in! I met a couple of ladies from Even Chance in January of 2018. They recognized my beauty (let’s be real, who wouldn’t?), but also loved my spunk. Before long, I was all set to move to Missouri and become an official Even Chance dog!
Even Chance does not operate on a first come, first serve basis. In most cases we have already decided the type of home and owner we want for our dogs. These opinions are based on the temperament tests we perform prior to accepting the dog into our program and the behaviors the dogs display as they grow up. Our agency reserves the right to deny acceptance of any dog to an owner who we feel the lifestyle does not match that of the dog. We are in no way judging you or your lifestyle; we simply want to put our dogs in the best living situation possible. We take very seriously the decision we make when it comes to placing one of our dogs in a forever home. If I sound like the perfect pit bull for your and your family and you are interested in giving me a forever home, do not hesitate! Please fill out an application here and my foster family will contact you to schedule an in-person meet and greet. We look forward to meeting any and all interested applicants.
