My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Maverick!!!

This GORGEOUS Cavalier King Charles Spaniel(CKCS) is named Maverick. He is about 5 1/2 years old, and is as sweet as he is beautiful.  He was given up by his previous owners, who did not care for and appreciate the jewel of a pet that they had. Lucky for Maverick, his neighbor was a MMR volunteer, and she contacted the rescue to see if we could help.  Everyone who has ever met Mav falls in love with him, and this volunteer was no exception.

His former owners rarely took him to the vet, and while we do not believe Mav was abused, he was most certainly neglected, and his former owners were angry at him more and more often because he had some accidents in the house. Fortunately, after some discussion, MMR was able to take him into our care.  He was obese, and needed to loose about 7 pounds!!!!!  That is a huge amount for a smaller dog!!!  Our vets discovered that he was also diabetic, and that the urinary issues he was having were due to the untreated, underlying diabetes.   It was also learned that his former owners knew for the last year that he had diabetes and did nothing to treat or help him.

Maverick is now on insulin twice a day and has lost a pound.  He has had no accidents and is feeling much better.  Currently, he receives his insulin injections twice a day, and should be regulated soon.  The vets also detected some minor arthritis in his lower back and legs and he is getting an anti inflammatory and glucosomine once a day.  He has responded great to this as well and shows no signs of being uncomfortable.

Maverick is a dog that defines what rescue is all about.  He is a magnificent dog, and his breed is known as one of the most gentle, loyal dogs in the canine world.  They are great in almost any home, and have a strong affinity for children and other dogs.  He is so grateful for every ounce of care and love he receives, and has won the hearts of so many of the volunteers and vets.  He has a sweet, 'can'do' spirit and is extremely obedient and is eager to please.  He is happy going for short walks, or hanging out in his crate, or crawling up on the couch/bed for a snuggle.  There just are not enough words to describe how great he is.

We are seeking a home for Maverick that can commit to his care for the rest of his life.  He will need to be on insulin for the rest of his life, and he needs to get the extra pounds off, and they need to stay off.  Cavaliers also need to be professionally groomed every 6-8 weeks to keep their coats looking great.  He is cut short now, but will be allowed to grow out his coat for the cooler months, as most owners of this breed do.  Please take into account the extra cost of grooming before you apply.  The cost of his insulin and food must also be considered.  His insulin is NOT over the top expensive, but should be considered.  It is a small price to pay for a treasure like Maverick.

In addition, we are seeking a home for Maverick that has another friendly dog in residence, as Mav enjoys the company of other canines.  Cav's are people dogs, and Maverick would love to have someone who works from home,  or someone who works part time or who is retired to hang out with.  He is not needy, he just is happiest when a human is around for him to adore.  Applicants who have experience with the breed, or who currently own a CKGS will be given preference in his placement.

**Mavericks adoptive family will have the opportunity to speak with the rescue vet for any questions or guidance they may need regarding the insulin.  It is important that they 'check in' with their vet shortly after adoption to turn his records over and to make the vet aware of his diabetes.  ALL diagnostic work for the diabetes and stabilization will be done prior to adoption.

You can save animals like this one by becoming a foster home for a dog in need! Fosters are like way stations between high kill shelters and forever homes. We need fosters so that we can save dogs before they are euthanized at the shelters. If you are interested in becoming a foster, please check out our information about fostering on our website:

MMR covers the vet care, food, and tools to get started. You supply the love. Fostering saves lives. Sometimes a foster home is the only thing standing between life and death.
