This adorable little dumpling is named Max. He is 3 years old, and 10 pounds. Shih Tzu (or a mix) We are not 100% sure. He has that very sweet Shih Tzu personality despite having lived in less than optimal circumstances. He was surrendered to a local area partner shelter by his former owners. He has been nothing but sweet and loving since coming into rescue.
Max's former owners surrendered him after he nipped at the husband who was trying to pull him out from under the couch. We are not sure why he was hiding under the couch in the first place, but we are sure he was frightened. Finally, these former owners said the wife was 'sometimes allergic' to him. Both the shelter and MMR feel that the reasons for surrender were contradictory at best, and most likely Max was a dog who spent long hours in a crate, got little exercise, was mistreated by the young children, and possibly hit by the adult male in the home. Despite all of this, Max has been nothing but a great little dog while in our care. He is getting much needed socialization, leash walks, and is decompressing from his formerly stressful life. Max does have some mild separation anxiety when being left alone, but that is also resolving. Max is fine dogs, and friendly, social, laid back dog. Max needs a buddy in the home ... Max will also need a family who will continue to work with him on his leash and house manners, as he was not given much training in his previous home. It is strongly recommended that Max take a basic obedience course with his new owner to help build the bond and trust between the two.
Max can also be a little protective of his food and chews/treats, and should be left alone while he is eating. He is o.k. with a toy being taken from him (if traded for another value item/treat), and once he is comfortable in the home, enjoys playtime. He would benefit from a fenced yard, but it is not required. He does need 3-4 leash walks a day, even if there is a fenced yard. This breed needs exercise and socialization to be happy and healthy, but dog parks are strictly off limits for Max.....he is too small and needs to meet dogs one on one, not in a group setting.
Max is a wonderful, young, healthy dog who has not shown any negative behaviors in foster care. He did not have a chance for success in his prior home, and now needs someone to give him a second chance. Someone who will work with him on basic training and socialization....something that was not done in his past home. He warms up quickly if given the freedom to come around on his own terms. If you would like to give this great little guy a place in your heart and home, and meet the minimum requirements listed above, please submit an application to begin the approval process.

You can save animals like this one by becoming a foster home for a dog in need! Fosters are like way stations between high kill shelters and forever homes. We need fosters so that we can save dogs before they are euthanized at the shelters. If you are interested in becoming a foster, please check out our information about fostering on our website:
