Here's what the humans have to say about me:
This is Tyson. He is a GORGEOUS purebred AKC male rottweiler who is about three years old. Tyson came to me as the result of a divorce, where neither spouse is in a position to be able to take care of him any long. Tyson is marked special needs because he can only go to an EXPERIENCED rottie owner. Tyson is not a happy-go-lucky dog like most of the rotties I have dealt with. He is domineering, suspicious, and food protective/aggressive. These are all issues that an experienced and dedicated owner can work out with him, but he needs a firm, consistent hand as well as constant reminders that you, and not him, are in charge. He is very protective of his food, but I have spent time working with him and he no longer growls or barks when I come near his crate while he is eating. If I come very close, he will hunker down over the food, however. He will let me take it from him, but I am always very careful to hand him a treat first to distract and satisfy him while i remove his bowl. Tyson generally does well with other dogs, and has lots of fun playing with a number of the other rotties that I have here. He has the potential to be a good family dog, though kids must be at least in their teens. Also, for the first while, I would recommend that he wear a muzzle during all interactions until he starts to know and trust you. He wears a "soft muzzle (made of nylons and open at the front so the dog can drink and take treats, but now allowing him to open his mouth enough to bite) without complaint and whenever company is over, I introduce him to them in his muzzle. He is a very moody dog, and at times is happy to meet strangers (especially if they have treats) and at other times will growl and hang back the moment he sees them. It is normal for the other rotties to mob visitors all demanding attention at once but to see tyson standing back from the crowd, watching and assessing the situation. He is very well behaved in the house, never going in the house after marking once his first day here. He likes to chew on rawhide and nyla-bones, but does not chew furniture or cabinets. Be aware, however, that he can be protective of his chew bones. The following excerpt from the AKC breed standard describes Tyson well: "The Rottweiler is basically a calm, confident and courageous dog with a self-assured aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships. A Rottweiler is self-confident and responds quietly and with a wait-and-see attitude to influences in his environment." If you are patient, experienced, and willing to put in the time and effort, Tyson may be a good fit for you.
