Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Shaggy is a very sweet and energetic 10 year old Shih-tzu/Schnauzer mix who has a clean bill of health, is neutered, and had a full dental. One would never think he’s already 10 by his attitude, he is always ready for a game of fetch inside or outside with his favorite ball, and will eagerly lead the way on even 5KM hikes. Walks are one of his favorite things next to food, belly rubs, and cuddles with his humans. He is a very curious little guy who loves to follow his nose and will follow you around the house to see what you’re up to.
Shaggy was surrendered due to neglect and didn’t have rules or training in his previous home. He is however very smart and loves to learn new things, he will do just about anything for a treat which makes him a very good pupil. He has learned a ton during his foster home stay, things like “sit”, “down”, “go to your bed”, “wipe your paws”, “get back”, “wait”. His recall is good when you have treats in your pocket but should not be off leash in unsecured areas as he has a high prey drive and will follow his nose when something catches his attention, and when he takes off he is very fast for a little guy. Due to his prey drive, a house with cats is not recommended, he has met a couple, one who was extremely passive and dog friendly but Shaggy was far too enthusiastic and made this cat uncomfortable. He is extremely excitable which can make him impulsive at times so care must be taken around open doors so he doesn’t decide to take himself for a walk, he can also be too eager to grab at treats, and has a habit of bolting through the door when it’s time for his walk, but with regular practice he’s learning to control himself and practice his manners. Due to his cleverness and energy he can also get bored and entertain himself by barking out the window or noises, because of this he is not suitable for apartments. A home with a securely fenced in yard would be ideal as he loves to hang out outside and explore, even in the cold he loves to stay out and give everything a thorough sniffing.
He is good when left alone with free range of the house but has tried to get into the trash a couple of times so we have made sure to secure it, or have also crated him a few times which he is fine with. He likes his crate as a hang out space and is ok to sleep in it, though does fine sleeping in his own, or family bed as well.
He would be fine as an only dog or with another dog in the home, though he does better with small dogs and will happily play with them if they are willing. He seems intimidated by bigger dogs and has snapped at a couple of dogs playing with his foster sister, though this could have been a protective measure. He can also be territorial and had trouble finding his place in the pack in one of his foster homes, this caused him to mark inside the home but improved when he was moved to a different foster family, because of this, we recommend his new home keep a close eye on him for the first few days and use positive reinforcement to prevent this behaviour if it comes up. Shaggy is very smart and learns quickly with the right training, he would be a great candidate for obedience training with his new family, this would really help set the right rules and boundaries and be a great bonding experience.
Shaggy is the happiest and funniest little dog, he will melt your heart when he looks at you and will make you laugh with his funny quirks. He deserves a loving home where he will be spoiled and any family will be lucky to have him, he LOVES people and is fine with kids as well though older kids would be preferable.
