Here's what the humans have to say about me:
This incredible soul is Athena. Athena is an approximately five- to six-year-old full-blooded German shepherd who has not had an easy life. Athena came to us as a stray late in September. This sweet girl has several signs of life-long neglect. She has obviously been used as a breeder dog, likely bred every heat cycle based on the extremely slack condition of her tummy. Her ears are full of papilloma (benign tumors) from chronic untreated ear infections. Our vet had to cut some of the papilloma out of one ear as the ear canal was sealed completely off and we could not properly treat the infection. When she was spayed, she was also found to have pyometra, an infection of the uterus which could have killed her if not caught when it was, the uterus removed and the infection contained. In spite of all of this, Athena is such an amazing dog. She is sweet and affectionate, extremely smart, obedient and loyal. She is pretty laid back but also playful; she LOVES to play ball and play in the water! This girl wants nothing more from life than to be loved and play fetch with her human! And of course she loves treats! She has also done well around older kids. Athena is dog reactive with new dogs and wants to try to dominate. She currently lives with a large pack, but it took months before she was fully integrated and there were still occasional issues for awhile. She is not aggressive, but it a product of the environment she came from, which we believe to have been a poor breeder where she was likely attacked by other dogs and never learned proper, healthy interaction with friendly dogs. She has since learned dog cues and language and even plays a little with certain dogs! However, unless placed with a trainer or experienced GSD handler who understands behavior, we feel Athena would do best as an only dog. We are looking for a home with a big fenced yard for this gem to enjoy all to herself. Prior GSD experience as well as experience and knowledge of similar behavior characteristics will also be requirements. Athena currently weighs 65-70 lbs and is fully vetted. Adoption fee is $150. Vet reference, home check and adoption contract required. Filling out an application is the first step in our process. Applications are given preference and attention before emails.
