My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I'm a 5 1/2 yo mini dachschund. I'm a little bit country, I'm a little bit Rock-n-Roll, but right now, I'm a little but unsure of myself. I've been bounced around a lot because I have some behavioral issues that can be challenging to deal with. I am also a dog trying to find where I belong. I have become pushy with larger dogs. Right now, I am a resource guarder around my food dish. It is important that my new family understand how to work me through this and learn to negotiate for prized possessions. Dogs like people, need to build a trusting relationship with those that care for them. That relationship also needs to be one of mutual respect. Rescue is going to evaluate my issues and work on some counter conditioning and try and re-establish trust. For a little guy, I am a bit of a bully. I am very sweet with people and love to play with my ball for hours on end. I am doing ok with kitties too. Right now, a dog experienced home with no children and smaller dogs or no dogs would be best for me. I may have had issues in the past being man-handled but we don't know for sure. A calm, assertive, and boundary setting home is what I will thrive in. I will not placed into a home with children.

Update 1/09/
I have made tremendous progress while in foster care. When I came into rescue, I had a terrible skin infection. That is almost gone now and my coat went form a dull flakey mess to black and luxorious. Rescue has worked on counter conditioning, limit-setting, boundaries, and desensitization with me. At some point, I was probably allowed to push my weight around. I am not allowed on the furniture. This helps me understand my place in pack, that includes my human pack. I have learned that I will be ok and that I'm safe. I have also been started on a very inexpensive medication that helps that little bit of anxiousness I have. I have turned into a very funny and sweet little guy.

Special thanks to Linda Christie of Sittin' Pretty Doggy Day Care in Saco for helping Rocco come out of his shell.
