Here's what the humans have to say about me:
THIS IS A COURTESY LISTING—This dog is not in foster care with BAPBR and we make no guarantees about his/her health or temperament. We are providing a service to Del Norte County Animal Control to help with adoption. Please contact the shelter directly if you are interested in meeting or adopting this dog – their info is below.
Barney, a 6-year old pit mix, is the longest resident at the Del Norte Animal Shelter. Since early 2015, Barney has been waiting at the shelter for someone to take him home after a domestic dispute destroyed the only family he has known. When we met Barney two years ago, he was a more outgoing, playful, active pup. On our recent visit, Barney was showing signs of kennel stress—he wasn't interested in coming out of his dog house and appeared depressed and lonely. Despite his rough start, recent decline and quirks (he can get grouchy when he's tired or hot), Barney remains a favorite of the shelter staff and he holds a special place in our hearts. We're looking for that special someone who can offer him the time, space, patience and love to lift his spirits and help him thrive.
Rose, a 73 year old shelter volunteer, loves Barney and hopes the perfect home can be found for the sweet boy:
"Barney is a dog who enjoys walks, playing catch and chewing up tennis balls. He doesn't cuddle and mostly keeps to himself; he ignores other dogs and strangers. It will be important for Barney's new family to get to know him before adopting him. He will do best in a quiet home without children as he can be moody when tired or too hot. When he growls he is saying " Please leave me alone". On the plus side, he is patient while being leashed, doesn't pull much, and doesn't require a lot of attention. He is a loyal buddy and doesn't mind living outdoors in good weather in a dog house or igloo. He is my favorite dog at the shelter."
Born Again Pit Bull Rescue regularly works with the wonderful staff and volunteers at the Del Norte County Animal Control Shelter located in Crescent City, CA—a small coastal town on the OR/CA border. The Del Norte Shelter is a limited facility in a rural area that's often at capacity. While the dedicated staff and volunteers that run the shelter offer the dogs as much comfort and compassion as possible, they struggle with low budgets, aging buildings, small indoor kennel runs, odd adoption viewing hours and low foot traffic. If you're considering adoption, the folks at Del Norte have a wide variety of wonderful dogs looking for homes to call their own and they're ready to help match you to the right one!
The Del Norte County Animal Control Shelter is open Monday – Friday from 8am to 5pm. They are typically closed Saturdays and Sundays though sometimes offer special weekend adoption hours.
