Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Theo: 2-year-old male mixed breed – 84 pounds
Brought in to the county shelter as a stray by a good Samaritan who believed he was hit by a car, this big guy immediately won over many hearts at the shelter. The medical staff gave him a thorough look-over and took some x-rays… and found no lingering injuries or concerns from any car incident. We did find that he loves to romp in a kiddie pool – big time! We brought this guy into our Lab Rescue program honestly believing he was a Lab mix… but his recent DNA analysis revealed that he is 50% Maremma Sheepdog along with some German Shepherd, with a splash of Rottweiler.
What Theo said (during a recent interview):
Hi, my name is Theo (previously known as Buddy). My Mareema Sheepdog genetic makeup means I am intelligent, loyal, an independent thinker, energetic, completely devoted to my person/family, and have a low prey drive with instincts to protect my “herd”. I will thrive in a home that has experienced, dog-savvy people to guide my training and socialization and ideally has no small children. I am insecure and shy around strangers and especially children (they are loud and move quickly) but I am slowly working through this with the help of my trainer and I am getting better every day. I love playing with other dogs and I am a favorite at Doggie Day Care and at the local dog park. I love daily walks with my mom and dad and I stay in perfect heel the whole time, unless there is a really, really good smell for me to investigate. I am learning basic commands like sit, down, wait, stay, come, watch me, load up, and go place. I am very eager to please and I am a fast learner. I am happiest when I have a “job” to do whether that is guarding my house or yard, hiking with my backpack, or practicing “doggie push-ups.” I bet with the right person I could even compete in obedience trials! Everywhere you go with me, people will comment on how “beautiful” I am. It’s true. I’m a knock-out. I am also house trained and will not get on furniture unless I am invited. My mom calls me “the cat whisperer” and even shy cats seem to trust me instantly. I get very anxious when I am left alone because all I want is to be near my person so if I can’t be supervised or dropped off at Doggie Day Care then I need to be in a very sturdy crate, kennel or dog run so I am safe (I am learning to like the crate and munch on goodies while I am in there). It takes me a little while to warm up, but once you have earned my trust I am the best, sweetest, most charming boy ever.
What Theo’s Rescue Rep says:
Friendly, engaging. Food motivated, but not obsessed. Loves praise and playing with his toys/bones. Walks pretty darn nice on leash. Gets along great with other dogs. Theo Boy is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, and heartworm negative. Theo would do best in a home without children. He can be protective of his people around strangers. Theo is located in Martinez.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
