Hi, My name is Smoky.
I am an 8 year old, FIV positive kitty that was owner surrendered for euthanasia because they found out after some years that I had FIV. FIV can only be spread through a bite or saliva and with little to no teeth, that is hard for me to do! I have a great, easy, friendly personality and would love to find a home where I am appreciated! I would be great as an only kitty, in a home with another FIV+ kitty(s), kept in a separate part of the house and would also be OK in a home with dogs too as FIV doesn't spread to dogs. I have many great years left so, please take a chance on me!
Smoky is a beautiful 8-year-old neutered male Russian Blue type cat with very light tabby markings and a lovely soft, silvery coat. He is FIV+, needs to go to a special home where he is the only cat, with other FIV+ cats, or in a separate part of a larger house. At some point, he may need special care, but is in excellent health at this time. He just had a full dental in November, and his FIV is asymptomatic – his blood work is completely normal and he shows no signs of illness, only a positive test for this virus. FIV can take years to develop symptoms, and in as good shape as he is now, it’s very possible that old age will get him before the bug does!
Smoky’s story is a sad one. His owners discovered he was FIV+ in the fall of 2012 during a routine blood test. Later, they boarded him and their other cats while they were away. They simply decided they did not want him back, maybe didn’t want to deal with his FIV status, and left him at the vets’ office. He was scheduled to be put down until a rescue volunteer stepped in at the last moment and took him home to save his life. He is now in foster care and up for adoption.
He is friendly and outgoing, loves to come up and bump his head against you and be petted. He’s a big ol’ box of purrs and lovin’. He’s not big on being picked up, but will definitely come sit in a lap when he wants to. He should get along OK with other cats, originally came from a home with 2 others.
Smoky is not a Fat Katz cat, he is available for adoption through Felines & Friends in Santa Fe. Their contact information is below.

When you do bring me home, make a 'safe' room for me while I get used to the smells and sounds of my new home. I'll adjust better this way! This will also give me a 'safe' place to go if I get scared.
Please call FAT KATZ, 505-293-2830 or email FatKatzAbq@Gmail.com for more info or questions! You can also inquire about fostering cats because we always need fosters! The number fosters we have determines how many kitties we can help!
