Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Pretty Pookie is a 4 year old, 5 pound little Yorkie girl who is very medically needy at this time. She is being fostered in Lighthouse Point, FL.
UPDATED BIO 12/19/2017: Sweet Little Pookie has had a really rough and rocky road since she came into UYR. Please read about her struggles in her updates below. She is doing amazingly well at this time, and is now ready for a very special home to adopt her. Keep reading ……..
Through a series of very expensive testing, it was determined that Pookie has the most commonly diagnosed form of non-infectious immune-mediated encephalitis called meningoencephalomyelitis, or more commonly referred to as GME. Pookie continues to have mild seizure activity, but she quickly recovers and is just a little sweetheart and in spite of her medical issues, she is a very happy little girlie. She has learned to trust humans again and loves being a part of the “pack”. She also adores her foster parents and will bond quickly to her new forever family.
For now, Pookie is being closely monitored by her vet and specialist to ensure she continues to do well on her current medications. Pookie is now stable and is ready to be adopted into a very special home. What would be the perfect very special home that Pookie needs? Here’s a short list….
- Pookie will always be a special-needs dog due to the diagnosis of GME. She may need to be monitored by, and in the constant care of, her veterinarian and consulting specialist. Her medications may need to be adjusted as needed for her continued care.
- Because Pookie is immune-compromised, she will be unable to receive any further vaccinations. This means that Pookie should NOT be taken to dog parks, grooming salons or be exposed to any animals who are not immunized.
- Pookie’s vision has been affected by the encephalitis and it appears she has blurred vision, although she can get around just fine, doesn’t bump into furniture or walls, and has adapted to this limited vision.
- Due to Pookie’s small size and her special needs, she must go into an adults-only home – no exceptions.
- Pookie may always be on medications which could cost approximately $100 or more per month. Her adoptive home must understand and agree to accept the costs of her medications to keep her healthy.
- Pookie’s adoptive home should be one where her family realizes patience is a big part of loving this special little girlie. She will reward her people with tons of love and happiness.
If you feel that your home and heart is ready for Precious Pretty Princess Pookie, please contact her Foster Mom for any further information, or complete the adoption application by clicking the link below. Pookie has a lot of love to give to a special family and she will definitely make herself at home and let you know how much she loves you – forever. And ever.
Note: The testing involved in determining Pookie’s diagnosis has been very expensive. UYR has spent over $5,000 on the testing/ER Visits/medications for this sweet girlie. If your heart leads you to donate to her medical expenses, every penny will be appreciated from the bottom of our hearts. If you cannot donate towards her medical expenses at this time, please say a little prayer that Pookie will continue to thrive and do well on her current course of treatment/medications.
UPDATED BIO 11/14/2017: Sweet Precious Pookie has had a really rough and rocky road since she came into UYR. Although she came in with a history of periodic seizures, the seizure activity became very serious – very quickly – and for a short time, we did not know if Pookie had the strength and resilience to survive. However, she has surprised us all and is doing very well at this time.
Through a series of very expensive testing, it was determined that Pookie has the most commonly diagnosed form of non-infectious immune-mediated encephalitis called meningoencephalomyelitis, or more commonly referred to as GME. This primary inflammatory condition involves the brain, meninges and spinal cord. She is currently taking a variety of medications which could be reduced or eliminated in the days and weeks ahead if she continues to thrive and do well. The one medication that has recently been added to specifically treat the GME is an immune-suppressive drug called Azathioprine. So far, this new medication is working the way it is supposed to work and we are so very hopeful that her health continues to improve. Since starting Azathioprine, Pookie has been seizure-free and acting like a normal little puppy – and this is super great news!! Pookie is a happy puppy, following the pack, barking and running and this is certainly something to be celebrated.
For now, Pookie is being closely monitored by her vet and specialist to ensure she continues to do well on her current medications. Once she is stable, Pookie will be ready to be adopted into a very special home. What would be the perfect very special home that Pookie needs? Here’s a short list….
