My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Kane is a 6 year old Karelian Bear Dog (not sure if he is mixed with something, or purebred). He came to Forget Me Not as a stray, and we were able to learn that he had been living on a chain (due to KBD's tendencies to run off in search of excitement), and his former owner gave him away to a backyard breeder a few days before he came to us. Turns out he had escaped from the BYB (good boy, Kane!) who didn't want him back, phew! So, now he is neutered and ready to live a fun and fantastic life with someone who wants him for a companion. He will be a great right-hand-dog and will love going on adventures - but he needs to be in a harness/leash to keep him from taking off again. Karelians are notoriously bad with recall... they will come back IF you are more interesting than what they are heading toward. This also means Kane will need a securely fenced yard.

Kane has a very sweet personality and loves people. He does bark at anything he perceives to be a predator (also typical KBD behavior). He would LOVE to be a hiking/backpacking dog (with leash/harness of course) and could also be a good agility dog. He is super smart and is a little bit dog selective - slow and patient introductions are the key for Kane. Once he has accepted a dog as a friend, he loves to play! He also loves to play with people, and is always up for a good ball chase... but so far, he isn't keen on bringing it back, HA. He won't drop it, but we are able to stick our hands in his mouth to retrieve the ball and he always lets us. He knows sit and will do so for a treat or a ball, but there has to be something in it for him... otherwise, it's a game of "Sit." "... why should I?" "Sit!" "... nah, not in the mood."

Having lived pretty much all his life on a chain has turned him into a very strong leash puller. We recommend a front-clip harness and lots of training sessions to help him learn to work with his handler, rather than try to drag them where he wants to go. He also jumps up quite a bit, so needs some work on that too. He does appear to be housetrained (yay) and at the shelter, he is an active chewer (this is often the case for chained dogs - they spend so much time bored and with so much pent-up energy, they teach themselves to chew EVERYTHING they can, for entertainment and release). We recommend strong chew toys for Kane, and lots and lots of daily exercise - a tired dog is a happy dog is a well-behaved dog.

Kane is hoping to find a home with a Karelian-savvy person who understands the quirks an unique personalities of this interesting, super-smart breed. He needs someone who is active and energetic and able to bring him out and about on all sorts of daily adventures; someone who is also not daunted by the challenge of training a stubborn and intelligent dog. When Kane finds that person with whom he just CLICKS, someone who really GETS him, he is going to be an absolutely amazing companion and friend. Are you the person who will finally let Kane know that he is home and loved and a buddy and partner, rather than an object to be chained out in the yard?

Kane comes with a 30-day money-back trial adoption period.

Spay/neuter, worming, microchip and all age-appropriate shots are always completed before placement, and are included in the adoption fee (suggested minimum $95; more gratefully accepted!)

Can't come to Republic? Don't let that stop you! We have monthly transports to both the Seattle area and Spokane, delivering adopted pets to their new owners. If you can add a little to your payment to help us cover our volunteer driver's expenses, that would be great!
