Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Herman, a German Shepherd mix, is estimated to be about 8 years old and 86#. Incredibly handsome, Herman is also intelligent and loves to learn. Herman is fully potty trained, and does not chew on anything but food or toys.
Because Herman is a strong, active dog, he needs to be walked daily by an adult. With training, he could learn to become a very disciplined walker. Herman knows his name and is working on “come” and “leave it/take it.” He also knows “sit,” “stay,” “down,” “look,” and “shake.” Herman stays off of the furniture and enjoys riding in the car, but with some anxiety, however, not to the point where he won’t get in or out of the car. His current family will be providing training to his new home to help make that happen and improve his overall confidence.
Herman needs a place to run, and a secure fence is a must for his new home. Today, Herman loves running and playing outside. He loves playing fetch and chasing squirrels and rabbits from the yard. Herman also loves playing fetch, playing with Kongs, and having his belly scratched. His most defining characteristic is his heart, though. Herman is an emotional guy, and although he doesn’t like to admit it, he gets scared sometimes by storms, the vet, fireworks, and visitors. He needs a family who will help calm him in extreme situations (e.g., medicine in advance of storms) and work with him to build his confidence so he’s not afraid of visitors and delivery persons. Because of the size of Herman’s heart, he needs a compassionate and empathetic owner, but also a leader whom he respects and looks to for protection and direction.
Herman loves kids; he is a family dog, but he needs a home with kids aged 12 and older, as he is unaware of his own size and strength. When Herman’s current family adopted him, they didn’t have kids. Now they have two young kids, and it’s not the best fit. He may knock down young kids, steal their Cheerios, and can be possessive of treats and toys. If he lives in a family with children, they need to be able to respect his space and intermittent need for alone time. Herman was recently adopted out to a family with a cat that would jump up and attack him - the family didn't think it was fair to either animal to try to keep them in separate areas of the house, and because the cat was there first, Herman was returned to the program. So his next home should either be cat-free, or have a cat that likes dogs, and is kind to them. Herman’s current home is invested in a successful transition and has arranged for a phased adoption and two training sessions with Giffy Dog at his new home. Herman is up to date on all vaccinations. He is neutered, and tested heartworm negative. The adoption fee for him is $150 - call 651-771-5662 if you are interested in him.
