My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I rescued Jet (neutered, 11 mo. old) from the county pound. He was the victim of neglect by his previous owner. He is a lively spirit, intelligent, and has many signs of being a balanced dog. Jet is still a puppy at heart and loves to play and then flop down for a good belly rub. He would be best suited in a loving, compassionate, active household, where he could get ample daily exercise and be able to run off leash in a yard. He doesn’t know his size, so he may be better in a home with older children or with active owner(s), weighing just under 50 lbs. He prefers males, although he is responsive to everyone. He was introduced to a cat and was not aggressive. He is good with other dogs.

He takes everything in stride, willing and friendly with dogs, people, kids, and even rambunctious puppies. He responds well to positive praise and positive reinforcement. Jet shows some hesitancy at times to sounds he is unfamiliar with (sounds of footsteps on gravel or a trash barrel being rolled). He is extremely curious, and learns by observation. He can be a toy hoarder (!). He has been learning commands such as sit, down, leave it and drop it. We have been working on the "leave it", "drop it" and ""stay" commands. He knows "sit" and "down" and has been getting trained to sit at gates and his kennel for me to open the door when I am on the other side. We are working on loose lead walking and he will continue to improve with a patient leader.

Jet has been tested for heartworms (negative results - so no heartworms), given Frontline Plus, Interceptor (heartworm preventative), treated for kennel cough and diarrhea and dewormed. Although he is becoming more responsive to women, he seems to prefer men. He is not a dog that tolerates being crated all day long, although I've been working to make the crate a positive experience for sleeping at night or for shorter breaks during the day. I've worked on housebreaking him and he loves the positive praise and reward from 'doing his job' so much, he will sometimes hold it during walks so he can go in the backyard. Jet has continued to become more affectionate, giving kisses and opening up. He has a gentle heart and will plop down for a good belly rub.
