My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

7-27-17 Benny is an adorable 4 year old, a little too thin 5-pound yorkie mix. He is being fostered in Zephyrhills, FL.

Benny's adoption fee is $450 and includes all vetting (neuter/spay, dental cleaning, immunizations, microchip and chip registration).  A Vet reference, personal references, and home visit are required for adoption. You may apply to adopt Benny by going to our website at www.unitedyorkierescue.org and completing the adoption application located on our home page.

UPDATED BIO 09/13/2017: Benny has been doing well in his foster home, although he has had a few challenges to overcome since arriving. He has been neutered, updated on all his vaccinations and had a dental cleaning. He has begun eating better and is putting on a little weight – Benny’s ideal weight should be about 7 lbs.

Benny appears to be good with older children, but will growl when other household pets approach him. This appears to be a guarding behavior since he really loves the attention he is receiving and loves his human(s). He doesn’t snap at other dogs, but only growls and his foster parents are working with him on this inappropriate behavior. Benny was previously living Alabama in an outdoor pen with a pig, both of whom lacked love or any human interaction. Now that he has lots of human attention from his foster mom & dad, Benny absolutely loves to snuggle and have his belly rubbed. When bedtime arrives, he runs to his humans’ bed and will snuggle up-close to them.

Benny also had not received any reinforcement regarding house-training, and initially had a tendency to lift his leg to mark in the house. Since he has been neutered, he wears a bellyband while in the house, and his foster parents are also working with him to properly housetrain him – it’s a work in progress. Benny gets nervous when thunderstorms roll through, which is often in the Florida summers. He seeks to hide from the thunderstorms, so his foster parents have begun putting him in a crate so that he feels safe and secure during these storms. Otherwise, he is not crated. He is also nervous when riding in the car, but it’s likely that prior to his rescue he never rode in a car.

PLEASE NOTE: With the attention that Benny likes to receive, and his growling towards other animals, it is felt that this sweet boy would be happier in a home where he won't have to share the love with other animals.

Benny's story starts in Alabama. One day these wonderful people were driving down the road. There in a backyard they spotted this very small, very dirty, hairy dog living in a pen in the backyard with a Pot-bellied pig. There was a bowl of water, but no food. This sad dog was so thin you could see his ribs and bones. He could barely lift his head to look up at them, but he gave them a wag of his tail to let them know he was happy to see a kind face.

These wonderful people knew they could not leave him there in that awful condition. They knocked on the door and somehow, some way, they convinced the people living there to let them take this dog with them. They quickly grabbed him and put him in their car before the people could change their mind. And so Benny was on his way to Florida. Unfortunately these wonderful people were staying in a motel and could only have two dogs there, so they snuck Benny in since they had their own two dogs with them. They knew they could not keep Benny locked in a motel room for very long. They also discovered that Benny was not the best boy on the trip from Alabama to Florida. They travel a lot and he was not a good traveler. These wonderful people asked United Yorkie Rescue to please find this sweet baby a home where he will be treated with love and given the care he so desperately needs.

Benny is now settling into his foster home. He is having some stomach issues that we hope are not too concerning. Benny will be taken to the vet very soon. He needs to gain at least a pound or two, so he will be given a healthy diet to fatten him up a bit. Benny is not yet house trained. He never had the need to learn manners because he was outside all the time in a pen with the little pig. It is most likely Benny was eating anything and everything he could find in that pen, which could be part of the reason for his stomach problems. Benny will need all his vaccinations, his neuter, and most likely a dental. It is possible none of that will happen until he is healthy and has some more weight on his tiny bones and his stomach issues are resolved. The vet will be able to tell us more very soon.

Please follow Benny's progress on his Looking for Love bio and on our Facebook page. Benny may not be ready for adoption for a while, but he could sure use any donations, prayers, and good wishes you want to send his way as he begins his long road to health.
