My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Ernie is an 11-year-old, 14 pound Schnorkie (Schnauzer/Yorkie Mix) being fostered in Ashland City, TN.

UYR friends, please help us share Ernie’s story by clicking SHARE so we can help him find his FUREVER home. On May 24th, sweet little Ernie will have been with us in his foster home for an entire year! This sweet boy lived 10 plus years in a puppy mill. All puppy mills are bad but Ernie’s was REALLY bad. So much so that it received coverage on TV stations and multiple newspapers that gave sad details about the terrible situation that Ernie and 300 other animals was rescued from. It makes us very sad to think about how bad Ernie’s life was all those many years so we try to focus on the positive: Ernie was rescued and he is SAFE. UYR took multiple dogs from this case but Ernie has been with us the longest and Ernie deserves to have a forever home. He has watched many, many other dogs get adopted from his foster home but sadly the right home for Ernie has not yet been found. Ernie is a gentle timid soul and a very handsome boy. He is not aggressive at all, he is just scared. He loves being around other dogs because they seem to “get him” and this gives him comfort. Ernie has the doggie version of PTSD from all his years in the puppy mill and he probably always will. He takes medication each day and that has helped him greatly. He has made great strides in his foster home since he arrived but he still has issues that make most adopters pass him by. Ernie will probably never be the lap cuddler that most Yorkie lovers are seeking. While he loves other dogs, he is still mistrustful of new humans and they scare him so he will stiffens up while being petted until he gets to know them. He simply can’t help it and we know for certain the humans at the puppy mill treated him very cruelly. So after 11 years in a terrible place, poor Ernie now has to learn at an older age that not all humans are bad; in fact some humans are very good. Ernie takes medication daily to help with his anxiety and it does help him. He seems to know this and takes it like the good boy that he is. Ernie enjoys being in his home as this is a place he knows he is safe. He dislikes leaving home and going for car rides but tries to be a brave boy for his trips to the Vet and groomer. He will go potty on pads and outside but if he gets scared he will occasionally still poop inside. These episodes are much less frequent than they used to be. He does enjoy sleeping with his human and this seems to be the time that it is okay with Ernie to be close to them. He dislikes crating very much since he lived his whole life in a cage.

Ernie is very much in need of a forever home where he can be loved by some very special adopter. Ernie’s forever human needs to be one who will be very patient and loving with him and let him “come around” on his own schedule. They need to be okay with giving him his anxiety medication each day for the rest of his life. They need to have at least one other easy going adult pup for Ernie to best friends with. A fenced yard is also a must and he can never, ever again be confined to a crate. Ernie’s forever person needs to be one with a heart for saving the imperfect, broken ones that have never truly had a chance to be loved and be a normal dog. They must see that Ernie is perfect in his imperfection and love him for being Ernie. We just know that Ernie’s person is out there. If Ernie’s story tugs at your heart strings and you think you might be Ernie’s human hero then PLEASE apply to adopt him today or email his foster Mom with questions. We are so hopeful that Ernie will spend his one year Rescue anniversary in his FUREVER home.
