Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Savannah has had a rough go for the last few months. She is a 19 month old sweetheart who has already captured the hearts of our entire family and network of friends! She was rescued by a very nice lady in the middle of Hurricane Ike. It appears she had been homeless for a while. It was determined she was hit by a car because her hip is completely dislocated. She has been so brave to walk around for almost two full months in pain. She had "FHO" surgery on 11/9/09 and is recovering very well. Her recovery will be 4-6 weeks, but our Vet is optimistic she will make a great recovery.
Savannah is heart worm positive and will begin treatment a few weeks after her hip surgery. Savannah knows some basic commands and seems to learn very fast. She's the perfect car rider, too! Our three other dogs, 2 little and 1 medium sized, get along with her just fine. According to her rescuer, Savannah does love kitties a little too much, but learned her limitations after some time. She is not currently living with any kitties.
Foster Update 11/30/08:
Savannah's hip recovery is coming along slowly, but surely. We have ramped up to long walks, but we are having to walk very slow so she'll use her leg. When she speeds up, she picks the leg up (she's very happy to RUN on 3 legs!). She is now "toe tapping" the weak leg, which makes the doctor happy, so we'll take it. Her muscle is still very atrophied and extremely weak. We have even started heating up our spa outside and letting her swim in place. She loves getting in the pool, but only on the sun ledge. She's not a big fan of swimming!
Savannah continues to be a very sweet and loving Golden. She is a huge attention seeker and is glued to my side most of the day. I have taught her "sit", "down", "stay", "heel" and ("high 5" just for fun). She's extremely smart and catches on very quickly when she's learning new skills. She was not exactly the model student when I first got her, but in two short weeks, she is walking almost perfect on a leash. She is not a "toy" player and doesn't really care to play with other dogs. Savannah's desire in life seems to be hanging out with us. She is pretty mellow and does not get into any trouble.
Her heartworm treatment is on hold for the next few months. The doctor said that he'd like to see if the Heartgard will get her to go negative. She was so light positive when she was tested, so it's hopeful we can make some head way with just the Heartgard. I will have her retested in a few months and she will undergo heartworm treatment if she is still testing positive.
Foster Update 11/24/08:
Savannah just got her staples out today and is really doing well considering how much her muscles had atrophied before the surgery. The Vet feels she will make a full recovery, but it will be very slow due to the severe muscle atrophy in her hind leg. Yesterday, she discovered our pool was a great thing! Now we can't keep her out of it. This is a great thing because rehabbing her hip in the pool will be very good for her.
Her heartworm treatment is on hold for a while. She was so lightly positive and we are hoping that with some Heartgard, she may test negative in the next few months. The Vet doesn't want to put her through any more stress until her leg is healed and she is bearing more weight. I think this is a good call!
The Vet thinks she may have some phlebitis in her front leg (where she is licking it to pieces!) He wrapped it and put some medication on it, but the bandage was off before we made it home. (I figured as much!)
She got LOTS of attention at the vets office and introduced herself to everyone that came in. She is really a very loving dog and is so friendly to other dogs.
Foster Update 11/14/08:
Hello everyone. I wanted to let everyone know Savannah's FHO surgery is over now and we are on the road to recovery. The doctor tried to put her hip back into place, but the injury was just too old. So, an FHO was definitely the way to go for her. She was pretty quiet the first day back to our house. She cries every time I lay in the floor with her. She can't seem to get close enough to us! The second day, she started feeling much better, which created the problem of her wanting to walk around and follow me. We are "towel" walking her still and we are trying so hard to keep her from moving around too much. I have had to start putting her in a kennel unless she is eating or outside going potty. Tomorrow will be day five from surgery and we are going to start walking short distances to try and build back her muscles. She is still not really bearing much weight on her leg, which is a good thing for now. I think she was so used to walking with a limp, that this is really not bothering her much anymore. She actually seems much happier now that the surgery is complete! We know the rehab process is so important to the healing, so we are wanting to do the best thing possible for her!
