My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

GRETA is a 5 year old mantle marked merle female with natural ears. I am very affectionate, sweet, and mellow. I love to have my belly, neck, and my rump petted, and will stand or lay there forever if you are inclined to keep petting me. If I want to be petted, I let you know by gently nuzzling my head into your lap, or staring at you with pleading eyes, or leaning gently against you with that look that says, "oh, please love me right now!" I also love to go for walks or hikes, but don't need a whole lot of daily exercise. We Great Danes like mild or moderate daily exercise, and I love either walking, jogging, hiking or chasing sticks in water (oh, what fun!). I'm also very good with other dogs, and I love playing tug-o-war with sticks with other dogs (especially around water). Occasionally I play a bit more dominantly than another dog may like, but we usually work it out, or my parents intervene and let me know to calm it down. I am also very nice with cats, but I can get jealous (and tell them to go away!) if they come over for attention from my parents when I am getting attention from them! I very much like to swim, and I also like splashing around at the shoreline. I really love having company at home and want attention from everyone who comes over. I do best if strangers ignore me for a bit and let me come and explore them... then we can become fast friends. I don't have many issues at all, but let me tell you about the few that I do have. I have this thing with obsessively Licking my back legs (primarily when I am left alone), so much so that for years now when mom and dad go to work and leave me at home, they have to be bandaged so that I don't lick them bloody. They get uncovered when we go for walks, and covered back up again when we get home. Though I LOVE people and affection, I get nervous around people who are nervous of me. I guess I misunderstand people (adults or kids) who are nervous around me and worry that they could be a possible threat. Them being nervous of me makes me nervous of them! And then I mistakenly think it is my job to warn my parents that something is amiss with some low growling and/or barking. I have never ever snapped at anyone, but my low growls indicate my worry and discomfort and it is something that can definitely be improved and should be worked on, because the last thing nervous kids or adults need is a big dog low growling or barking at them! I especially can have a hard time with small children, and feel that a home without small children would suit me best. On the other hand, if people are friendly and confident (or even disinterested) in me, I am very happy and friendly and want to make friends with them! And though most of the time I am find with new things and situations, every once in a while some new thing (a new smell, someone wearing a huge coat or a strange hat, someone with an unusual gait, etc.) will spook me and I will be afraid. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it, but it's not too often that this comes up.
