Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Meet Louie is a 3 month old Cockalier who is available for adoption at the New Nodaway Huamne Society. When full grown, he should weigh between 15-20lbs.
Last week, Louie was scheduled to be euthanized at his breeder's request because he was diagnosed with luxating patellas in both hind legs. Luxating patella also known as "floating kneecap" is when the ridges forming the patellar groove are not prominent, and a too-shallow groove is created. In a dog with shallow grooves, the patella will luxate (jump out of the groove) sideways, especially toward the inside. This causes the leg to 'lock up' with the foot held off the ground.
We had Louie evaluated by a second vet and they said potential adopters should not be concerned. Louie is a healthy and active puppy with some movement in his knees. This is common in many small breed dogs. He may grow out of the condition and it'll never bother him OR worse case scenario he will require future surgery. Regardless, this condition made Louie unfit for commercial selling so we stepped in to find him a loving forever home!
Louie is currently in a foster home and twice has had his leg "catch". He cries in pain, but both times his leg realigned with some gentle massaging and by extending his leg.
We are recommending Louie not live in a home with young or rowdy children; same with bigger or overly playful dogs. Its also recommended he have limited access to stairs as that puts more stress on his knees. It will be important to feed Louie a quality food with Omega 3 and to properly maintain his weight. Potential adopters should be committed to Louie's long-term care and be willing to seek out surgery if required. Louie's adoption fee is $120 and includes his neuter surgery, up-to-date vaccinations, rabies shot and microchip. Interested adopters can download an application at https://nodawayhumanesociety.wordpress.com/adopt/ and submit it to Wendy Combs at nnhsmanager@embarqmail.com. Louie will be matched with the best applicant; not first come, first serve.
