Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Piper – Shepherd mix (possibly some Mal), female, spayed, vaccinated to date, micro chipped, ~70lbs (still needs to fill out), ~11months old.
Piper is ready to find her forever home in a sport or working home! She would excel at obedience, tricks, scent detection or possibly SNR. She is a busy bee and needs an active, dog savvy person to keep up with her. A jog around the block or throwing the ball a few times in the yard will not cut it for Piper. She originally came to me as she was at risk of being euthanized at the local shelter. Though she passed all temperament tests to be in the adoption room, as a busy puppy she had spent far too long (almost 3 months!) cooped up in a run at the shelter and her energy was increasing while her manners deteriorated. She was becoming a concern with volunteer dog walkers and less than dog savvy potential adopters. Piper was not being mentally or physically stimulated and started rough puppy mouthing and jumping all over new people. The shelter did not feel she was aggressive, but was not suitable for shelter adoption.
Piper is a FANTASTIC dog for a confidant, firm but loving, active home. It’s clear that someone loved her, socialized her and spent lots of time training her before she ended up as a stray not claimed. It took very little time for her to settle in to a routine in a home and chill out. With daily exercise, puppy play dates with another Shepherd pup, mental stimulation and clear boundaries Piper has shown what a fantastic, smart, loving, loyal and trainable girl she is.
She is crated trained when left alone or at least limited to a space that is “puppy proofed”, she is house trained, knows tons of commands (sit, stay, come, down, heel, in, out, wait, leave it, drop it, shake a paw/other paw, roll over, fetch it…). She has not done much mouthing since coming home. She will occasionally resort back to mouthing if she is extremely excited or encouraged to mouth or when she is unsure of what is being asked of her. Providing she is exercised her mind and body enough through out the day, Piper is happy to hang out on the couch (if you invite her) or lay at your feet by the fire. She is very cuddly and loves attention or grooming. You can touch her anywhere on her body, take toys or food from her, hug her, kiss her face… she loves attention.
Piper is currently living with a very canine savvy cat but is probably best in a feline free home. When she is bored or hasn’t had enough exercise she tends to bark at the cat. My cat is also happy to wrestle with her but most felines would not handle that kind of attention (nibbling, nose punching, paw on the head…). She currently lives with another large dog and two small breed dogs and gets along with everyone. She is best with other dogs around the same age and size, she can be pushy and play very rough. She is also selective with which dogs she gets along with, especially when on leash so a careful introduction is a must.
Piper needs a good amount of exercise every day, rain or shine. She also needs to use her brain daily whether you’re running through obedience commands, learning new tricks or scent work. Piper’s ideal home will give her a job to work on every day. She is tug motivated but has minimal interest in a ball, she is praise and food motivated as well. She learns quickly and though she is still a puppy she has rather decent focus for tasks. She is learning the scent game and her trainer noted: “she was a little unsure and mouthed a bit, also slightly distracted by another dog but quickly focused, understood the “game” and enjoyed learning”.
Piper needs an owner who can keep teaching her and challenging her with new tasks. If left to her own devices Piper enjoys passing her time eating a bar of soap, chewing on shampoo bottles, turning my fire logs in to kindling, defluffling every toy in the toy box, distributing every single toy throughout the house, shredding toilet paper off the roll or shoving toys in to anyone and everyone’s face or hands in an effort to play tug. Thankfully she doesn’t touch furniture or other people items aside from the above.
If you can give Piper a home with a “job” please contact us at adoption@uglymuttsdogrescue.com Tell us about yourself and your household – type of home, yard access, other people in the home, your occupation, other pets in the home, vet reference, previous dog experience, why does Piper appeal to you, what are your training and exercise plans for Piper?
Piper is currently being fostered in Caledon, Ontario. Adoption fee does apply.
