Meet Duke! This handsome hunk of a dog is what we like to call the gentle giant. Despite his past, this boy has remained nothing but loyal, loving, and joyful! Duke was originally adopted by a family who had 5 children, ages ranging from 3-15. Though they loved Duke, they didn't have room in the house so he stayed outside a lot, where he eventually tired of and began to roam. After some complaints from neighbors, they decided to surrender him to rescue in search of a home where he could enjoy the more luxurious things in life.
Duke is an amazing dog, believed to be a mixture of great breeds such as the Leonberger, Saint Bernard, and Mastiff. He is estimated to be around 3-4 years of age and currently weighs around 125 lbs. He will most likely max out at around 145-150 lbs. He is your all around friendly dog, who enjoys being around pretty much everyone and everything. He gets along great with other social dogs, especially the smaller ones and really enjoys cuddling with his smaller canine friends. He gets along well with cats who are well adjusted to dogs and are not frightened. If a cat runs in fear he will give chase, but is easily recalled before any incident could occur. Duke's favorite thing in the world though, is children. He adores them and really loves his people. He is extremely loyal, and is a true guardian for any household or family. He enjoys hugs and cuddles, and even has been taught the command "hug" where he will sit up and offer his big paws as arms to cuddle you with and is gentle the whole time as he does it. He is extremely well mannered and being a low energy pup, no fear of knocking the smaller kids over. H would make a wonderful addition to any home with children of all ages.
Though he can be a protector and stand when he needs to, when it comes to his family, Duke is quite submissive. If he happens by the trash and smells something tasty and goes to potentially get a taste. Simply saying his name with a firm tone causes him to stop and go to his bed, offering an apologetic look, clearly saying "I'm sorry, I couldn't help it!". He minds very well and training is a breeze as he is motivated most by affection, but a few tasty snacks help too. He already knows several commands including sit, stay, down, shake, and of course, hugs!
Duke is housebroken, leash trained, free leashed trained, and is currently working on his crate training. He is up to date on all his vaccines, neutered, microchipped and current on monthly heartworm and flea prevention. Duke is light heartworm positive, but with treatment he should be completely worm free within the year and will have no side effects of the disease. We will cover all treatment costs should an adopter wish to have him prior to completing his treatment, as he is available for foster or adoption while undergoing this process due to him being a low energy dog.
Due to his size, we most likely will try for a local adoption within Texas and it's surrounding states only. For more information on how to adopt or foster Duke, please contact us at KMCRescue@Gmail.com
