My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Lazarus is a given name and surname. It is derived from the Hebrew (Eleazar) meaning "God has helped." TFF couldn't be more elated to do our part by rescuing this sweet gentle giant. Lazarus is full of life and very in tune to his new surroundings and those who will be caring for him. Although not totally blind and can detect shadows, this boy will follow you to the earth's end. Rattle a baggie of treats and he will automatically go into a sit position, as if to say "please" and then tilt his head in acknowledgement of the gift. All the volunteers are all falling head over heels in love with him with this fella! Lazarus is housebroken, loves his warm bowl of chow, tasty treats, and finds comfort in his soft blankets.

Lazarus, a/k/a “Laz,” a 60-pound, 1-2 year-old male mix breed is energetic and full of life but suffers from several conditions that require special attention. Laz is substantially blind in both eyes and apparently is only able to see shadows, or images, at best. This does not deter him from enthusiastic play but he should be kept in a fenced or otherwise confined area where he cannot hurt himself. Other than the basic issue of having little sight, this condition is completely manageable and requires no treatment. Relying on key words and commands to maneuver around objects, Laz is sure to make his way into your heart. He likes going for walks, car rides and loves playing with squeaky toys and catching falling rain drops in his mouth from the sky.

More problematically however, Laz has been diagnosed with the Stage 2 of protein-losing nephropathy (PLN) kidney disease. This results in excess loss of protein in the urine and ultimately kidney failure. Treatment includes a special diet and drugs that reduce protein loss. The cost of these drugs amounts to only a little $1.00 per day.

Laz also requires periodic veterinarian visits (no less than semi-annually and preferably quarterly) to monitor his blood creatinine and BUN levels. We are successfully lowering and managing his levels through a homemade diet and seeing great results in his overall being.

We rescued Laz because of his spirit and personality without recognition of the underlying medical issues. We are totally committed to help him live his life to the fullest irrespective of inconvenience or cost. Unfortunately, the reality is that he would have not survived otherwise.

Although Laz is accepts his routine at our facility, we believe like with any dog, that he would thrive and prosper in a home of his own, outside of the shelter environment with an attentive, patient and loving owner/caregiver. If you would like to consider helping this very special guy, please let us know. We will discuss and answer any questions or concerns you may have. If you are able and willing to open your home and heart to Lazarus, we will discuss with you subsidizing the ongoing costs of his care. Also, we have a wonderful group of volunteers who, if needed, would be delighted to assist transporting him to and from veterinarian appointments.

Our objective, as it is with all dogs rescued by The Farley Foundation, is to focus on Lazarus’s best interest by providing him with the care and loving forever home he deserves.

To meet or learn more about Lazarus, please contact the Farley Foundation at www.FarleyFoundationNC.com or email Adopt4leggeds@aol.com or call 910-315-9569. Thank you for wanting to foster a homeless animal in need and for giving this special fella the opportunity to live his life to the fullest!

Mutts Appreciated,
