Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Here's Rudy - a sweet, loving dog who enjoys children and dogs of all sizes. He is a 1.5 yr old, 38# male shepherd mix that came into our program as a stray from an animal control. When his big ears are upright he looks absolutely magnificent. He is a very good boy, and a joy to have around. Rudy wants to be by your side or at least in the same room where he can watch everything you do; when you sit down to rest, he wants to be in your lap. House trained ( he will go to the door so you need to watch for that). and kennel trained - he does get kenneled when fosters are gone and we recommend that you do the same. If not, you may be missing a boot, a shoe or even a remote. Foster is in the process of teaching him that is not OK - he just started this so he is being corrected and redirected. He will need supervision in the house, and plenty of his own approved things to chew on. Because the foster usually transports more than one dog at a time, Rudy has been crated during the car rides - expect he would be fine if just tethered instead. He enjoys walks - pulls a little - you could use a walking harness to reduce this, and as with all young dogs, we recommend obedience training. Rudy has good recall. He has met children as young as 6 and was fine - he doesn't really jump up but will at times and does so very gently. He doesn't mind cats and lives with 2 chihuahuas, a retriever and a shepherd mix and gets along with all of them. He's gentle with the small dogs and gives them kisses; reads cues from the big dogs to back off if he gets too playful. Another playful dog and a fenced yard would be ideal - this is a young dog that will need regular exercise. Rudy knows commands sit, down, off, come, bring it. He only barks if the other dogs initiate it - then he chimes in. He has been recovering from heartworm treatment (which includes a whole month of strict rest after injections of medication) so he has some pent up energy that he releases now by running the perimeter outside in the back yard. The first monthly heartworm preventative tablet has been given, and 5 more tablets will be sent with him at time of adoption. A follow up heartworm test MUST be done in 4 months (around mid-April) - it will be done at no charge to you ONLY if done at Life Care Animal Hospital in St. Paul. If you choose to have it done at any other vet clinic, it must still be done on this date but now you will have to pay for it, and you must contact Second Chance so we can get the results from your vet. Expect to keep him on monthly preventative for a full year after the initial treatment; thereafter you can reduce coverage to just during the mosquito season. Rudy has been neutered, is current on distemper, rabies and bordetella vaccinations. His adoption fee is $250. Call 651-771-5662 if you would like to meet him.
