My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

ADOPTED!
Dillon is a remarkebly handsome English "Redtick" Coonhound that was saved from a high kill shelter where he was slated for euthanasia. He is a young, friendly and super affectionate 2 year old male that weighs about 55 pounds. Like all our adoptable dogs, Dillon is:
* current on vaccinations
* neutered
* microchipped
* dewormed
* on heartworm preventative
* dog friendly
* crate trained

Dillon gets along with other dogs but probably should not go to a home with very small dogs due to the possibility he might accidentally hurt them during play. He has not been observed with young children but would probably be fine with kids over 12. He is initially shy with people he doesn't know, especially men, but he warms up once he gets to know and trust them. He's a wonderful dog with lots of love to give. Prior hound experience would be a plus.

Coonhounds are well known and loved in the South where they are frequently used for hunting and/or competitive trials, but they are rarely seen in the Northeast. Like Beagles, English coonhounds are scent hounds that trail prey by following the scent rather than by sight. Dillon is an active and energetic dog that will make a great companion for someone who is also active and enjoys spending time outdoors. Because of his size, Dillon would not be well suited to an apartment or small home. He'd prefer a spacious fenced yard to play and exercise in addition to long brisk walks. As with most young dogs, he would benefit from basic obedience training. He's a quick learner who's willing to work for treats. He learned "sit" within the first day of his arrival.

IMPORTANT: Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue does not operate a shelter where the public can meet our dogs. All of our Beagles are cared for in a loving foster home. Prospective adopters MUST submit an adoption application and be pre-approved to adopt. Once an applicant is approved, we’ll begin a matching process—the right dog for the right home. Submitting an application does not guarantee that you will be approved. Please visit our web page: www.safehounds.com to learn more about the adoption process and to download our adoption application.

Unable to adopt? Please consider sponsoring a Beagle. By helping us we can continue to make a difference in the lives of these deserving dogs. We have many hungry hounds to feed and are always in need of dog food and other items from our wish list as well as financial support to help us care for our dogs.
