Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Shane is a 8 year boy turned in by his owners to the SPCA. This sweet boy is current on his vaccinations, neutered and heartworm negative. We did test Shane’s thyroid and it was low, so he is now on inexpensive thyroid medication which should help with his skin and coat.
Foster Update 11/14/08:
Shane likes to run when the leash is loosened on walks, but is patient when I need a breather. He loves to play but has not been rambunctious in the house. We continue to work on having a soft mouth and not counter surf. Shane's hot spots are healing and he remains on allergy medication. His booming baritone voice is only used when startled. Shane will come, sit and stay and has been fine alone during the day (except one thing). He has eyed the gate latch and may be waiting to try to open
it when I'm not looking. I like Shane alot - he is a loving, smart, friendly and playful guy.
Foster update 11/9/08:
Shane is a wonderful dog with a great energy level. He loves walks, knows sit and stay and gets along with other dogs. He is very sweet and loves to be petted. He doesn't like riding in cars and gets very nervous. Shane's biggest problem is his counter surfing. However, with strict rules and consistent reminders, he learns the ropes. He will make a great companion!
Foster Update 8/31/08:
Another big day for Shane!. We went to the dog park for the first time. He had a ball running and running and jumping into the pond. He seemed to favor sniffing people. He had a great day and got along famously with dogs, people and a couple children who wanted to pet him. He got compliments, too, from his new human friends.
Besides being sociable, Shane is also turning out to be a good watch dog at home. He's quite a guy if you ask me.
Foster Update 8/28/08:
Shane's coat is continuing to look better and better. His woofer is more confident and if he ends up alone in a room, he lets out one powerful WOOOOOOF to locate me.
Our boy is a bit of an escape artist and a runner. I've noticed him checking out doors, locks, places in the fence, but today is the first day he got of my yard. I usually stay in the backyard with my dogs, but today, I went inside for less than three minutes! My backyard was empty, as my two schips went with! AGHHH! The three of the were sitting right outside of the gate, looking at me as if I were just a screaming mimi.
Now I have to find the secret door, which is not in an obvious spot.
Foster update 8/18/08:
It's been a big week for Shane! On Tuesday, he was neutered and he sailed through that. Shane attended his first GBGRR function on Saturday (Aug. 16). He enjoyed being around all of the people and other dogs. He was smiling and waging his tail the whole time! I had never been "Out" with him, so I wasn't sure how much he'd like it. His car-ride was uneventful as Shane gazed out the windows, but he slept all the way home! It was a big day for him!
To sum it up, it appeared to me that Shane had a great time, as did I, meeting other people and dogs. Whoever gets this big-guy is going to very lucky, indeed.
Foster Update 7/31/08:
Shane's skin and fur have already improved. But ah ha! he's sneaks things such as socks, dishtowels, etcetera. I guess he thinks he's invisible when he's slinking with a prize in his mouth! His personality is friendly and he is very strong-willed. When he doesn't want to do what I want him to do, he stares straight forward as if in another world. He is always, however, in the mood for a deep massage. He's a hoot!
Foster Update 7/29/08:
I'm a new foster parent and I have had Shane since Sunday(7-27-08). He had a good dinner & a nice warm bath. While cleaning his ears, I noticed that his ears were hot. I took him to the vet for his ears and skin condition. They said he has a bad ear infection (poor guy) and we left there with a load of medicines to address both problems, so I am hopeful that he well feel better soon. Despite health issues, he is energetic, curious, and LOVES attention. He already knows basic command and executes them well...except "crate". We'll work on that and I will give him time to realize that crating is not a bad thing and that it is mainly a night time thing.
I have 3 cats and 2 Schiperkkes. The cats look at me like "oh great, thanks alot) but the dogs are much more accepting. Shane plays a little, but hasn't seen much playtime or toys in his past. He's loving and respond really to petting and massages. He pretty easy to medicate. He is house-broken. He pulled a bunch of toilet paper off the role and shredded it to little pieces in the hallway. His self-esteem needs to be raised, and already, he holds his head high when I gush over him. I hope to post a photo within the next couple of days.
