Here's what the humans have to say about me:
This big, beautiful blonde boy was turned in by his owners because they were moving. Orion seems to have had good care for most of his life until the last two years or so. Orion is a great traveler, he sat in the center of the backseat and rested his head on my shoulder while we were in transit to his foster home. He is a leaner and a lover. He was very matted when he came into the program and had to be shaved. He has a beautiful head on him and will be breathtaking and dignified when his fur grows out!
Orion is 7 years old, current on vaccinations, neutered and microchipped. He has successfully completed heartworm treatment.
Foster Update 8/19/08:
Orion has successfully completed his heartworm treatment, coming through with flying colors. His short hairdo is growing in and he is getting quite fuzzy. He is really going to be a handsome Golden when his fur grows all the way in. Orion is a very smart dog that really loves learning. He has taken to obedience training very well and actually enjoys the process. He would be great to do agility or obedience trails with. He is still learning what he can and cannot have and is doing much better with letting go of those things that he cannot have. Orion has shown himself to be a protector of his home and scared away someone who was trying to get into our boat in the driveway late one night last week. His barks alerted us that something was wrong and I am sure frightened the burglar! The "bringing the bowl" to the kitchen hasn't quiet worked out the way that I had envisioned as he brings it to the kitchen all the time with the exception of feeding time :) He has spent quite a bit of time with kids under the age of 6 and is good with them but still steals their toys which makes for some unhappy moments. He had his first trip to the beach and he liked the water. He followed the kids into where he had to swim with no problems and wanted to be with them the entire time. He craves attention and will put his head on your lap or leg to ask to be petted. His less than perfect are getting fewer as he really wants to do be a "good dog". With love and consistency he will be a great companion.
He is now waiting for his forever home.
Foster Update 7/26/08:
Just reporting that Orion started his heartworm treatment and seems to be doing well. He is starting to want to play already (treatment was Thursday) which I take as a good sign. Behaviorally he is starting to come around and is learning to let go of things and to not mouth so much. He is even learning to bring his bowl to the kitchen when it is time to eat! He really is a sweet, happy boy. A home with older boys (bigger then him) would be perfect as he really loves to play rough so wrestling with boys would be great.
Foster Update 7/14/08:
Orion is doing well and is a big goober. He is very smart and is learning manners. He has started to play with our Golden so he doesn't need to have our undivided attention all of the time. He certainly does not act like he is 6 1/2 - more like 1-1/2!
He starts heartworm treatment next week. He should handle it fine as he is strong and otherwise healthy. Keeping him quiet will be the challenge.
Foster Update 7/1/08:
It took a couple of days but Orion seems to be settling in to being at our house. He is very sweet and has lots of energy. He is also very smart and has some basic obedience training. He is a HUGE chow hound which is probably our biggest challenge as he has no manners in the kitchen. He respects a gate though which helps and we are working with him to be less desperate about food. He is going in his kennel willingly (most of the time). He runs the door so we are working on waiting before the door opens and kennel him before we open the front door. He is getting along with Tucker, the wheel chair bound mother-in-law and we are pretty sure he will be ok with the grandkids but we are going slow with that introduction. He has seen the cat and I am not sure if he is curious or aggressive but the cat isn’t sure either so that will be a work in progress. All in all he is doing well and should be a great family dog.
