Dakota was rescued from the Orange County Shelter where he was found bloody, dehydrated, and very sick. In fact, he was in such bad shape that the shelter thought he was a very old senior dog. We had quite the shock after getting him to our vet only to find out that he still had his baby teeth!
Dakota has recovered and is a gorgeous young boy now with loads of personality. He is somewhat "special" though, and it may be hard to recognize when you first meet him, but once you have been around him full time, you see it. We believe that Dakota has a form of autism.
Dakota has learned to play ball and just loves it. He also just loves hanging out with you. He's not a runner and would prefer to just be by your side. He is very playful and plays a lot with the other dogs here at the GDF Ranch and we feel that he really would do best in a home with another dog who likes to play a lot. He is great in the house and although he's a puppy, he's not a chewer. He loves toys and he loves men in particular. He has a cute gruffly sort of bark and somehow always has me laughing. Dakota has no other emotion other than happy and joyful.
Dakota does NOT do well in a car...he gets car sick easily. I think Dakota would do best on a large property with people and dogs to play with and a family who is home with him (retired, etc). Dakota has a habit of nipping (he doesn't do it out of meanness, but he does a lot of it when he's happy and excited and it can be rather hard at times), so we feel that a home with no children is best. Although we have tried to break him of this habit, his autism keeps him from learning 'no' -- he just gets even more happy when you use that word on him! Dakota also sometimes just 'wets' when he 'forgets' to go outside...he is very much like an excited toddler and gets distracted easily.
