Several weeks ago, two cofounders headed out to a beautiful setting in search of a sad situation. As they headed down a trail to a lake filled with blooming lily pads, they were greeted by four dirty and disheveled young dogs. Each was painfully thin and covered in fleas. For some time, they had made their home under the dock of the lake. In this picturesque place their condition stood out like a sore thumb. Desperate for affection and grateful for attention, three of the fou r melted into the arms of the cofounders. How many times had they followed park visitors to their cars only to be turned away? When I saw them there, four young males alone against the world, they reminded me of so many novels and movies that I had loved growing up. These 4 little dogs made me think of stories about finding beauty and potential in the least likely of places, of rising above negative circumstances, of misfits finding their way in the world, and of bonds of friendship and brotherhood that are strong enough to get us through difficult times in our lives. Three of these special little dogs have already left for rescue but one remains. We've decided to let him write his story here with us. And because so many underdogs were once outsiders like him, it seems only natural to introduce him as our newest pup.
