My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Olive is a spunky little 11-pound one-year-old dachshund/terrier mix who loves EVERYBODY. That in itself is not so unusual for a puppy, but what is amazing is that she loves everybody instantly. She doesn’t need time to adjust to any dog, person, or circumstance. She is immediately affectionate with all people, immediately playful with all dogs.

In Olive-land, there are two times of day: 1) playtime, and 2) affection time. When it’s playtime, she loves to go outside and play chase with her foster sister. Then it’s time to prance about the yard and check out what the squirrels are up to. That done, she’ll settle down in the grass and happily munch on a twig until you call her back into the house.

In the house she loves toys, particularly chew toys. She will go from room to room checking out the toy situation until she finally settles on one and gets down to chewing. If she can manage to snag an empty food wrapper or container along the way, so much the better. For a one-year-old, she is very restrained in her play. She’s energetic, but not high-energy, and she requires virtually nothing from you to keep herself amused.

Though she is self-amusing, Olive would really prefer to be at the center of your attention at all times. She can’t jump up on the furniture because she’s too short, but you will regularly see her paws and head extending over the edge of the couch, trying to get your attention so you will pick her up for a snuggle. Once on the couch, she’s very happy to sit either in your lap or right beside you. She likes your petting hand to be in constant motion, and she’s not picky about where—she’s quite as happy with a scratch on the head as she is with a belly rub. She loves to be hugged and held. She also likes to put her face up against yours. She’s not a particularly kissy dog, but you may—if you are very, very good—occasionally snag a little lick.

Olive is crate-trained. She stays in a crate while her dogmom is at work. She is mostly housetrained, but she is sometimes careless, and she’ll need some work in a new environment. She happily sleeps in a dog bed next to dogmom’s bed. Olive sleeps through the night unless you get up in the middle of the night, in which case she escorts you to the bathroom and goes right back to bed.

Olive rarely barks—except when she hears the garage door open and knows dogmom is home, and then she sends out yips of glee. She would make an excellent apartment dog. She’d do equally well with a big backyard to run around in. We haven’t seen her interact with children in particular, but given her general demeanor, we believe she’d be great with kids. She’d love to have a dog buddy, but would do just as well with a person or people who are devoted to her. In short, Olive would fit well into any situation.
