Yukon is an adult male Samoyed. 52 pounds. Good with other dogs. Rides quietly in crate in the car. He is tolerant of grooming. He is a sweet, kind boy. He will be available for adoption after June 28tth.
Background. Local shelter received him in as a stray. The shelter named him Yukon and estimated his age at 7 yrs old. Shelter attempted to place him twice. First family had allergic reaction (myth on internet that Samoyeds are hypoallergenic - they are not). Second family noticed he was not putting pressure on right rear leg and was limping. Upon return, the shelter staff veterinarian took x-rays of and determined he had a partial anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in his knee and mild hip displaysia. Poor Yukon!
Shelter evaluated temperament with other dogs and he passed - non-reactive. Previous adopters confirmed this evaluation, as he was good with dogs and kids they encountered at the park. He is gentle on a leash, but sometimes pulls hard if he notices squirrels/rabbits. Unknown his behavior with cats.
Second adopter thought he may have separation anxiety. Perhaps this is due to the fact he came in as stray, adopted out once and returned, adopted out again and then determined his had a knee injury and quite possibly is in pain.
Yukon will be evaluated by the dental vet on Wed June 15th as appears to need a minimum a dental cleaning, and the orthopedic vet on Friday June 17th to confirm the ACL tear and determine if surgery is required. Tentative surgery date is scheduled for Tuesday June 28th. This type of surgery is fairly common (dogs and humans (football players!) too) and does require up to 6 weeks of restricted activity during recovery. Keeping them restricted is sometimes hard, as they feel better, and are raring to go walk and run!
We believe Yukon will be a wonderful, active companion for the lucky person who chooses to adopt him and help him get through this medical bump in the road!
