My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Oscar is a handsome young boy with golden eyes. He was picked up as a stray in Upstate NY and not claimed by anyone. At first he was very grouchy and he doesn’t like to be handled by strangers (probably how the shelter gave him his name), but he bonded quickly with his foster mom and within a day, he allowed her to groom him and treat his ear infection. Since he was a stray, we don’t know his age for sure, but we think he is probably 3. He is very playful and not shy or fearful of anything. He loves going for walks and is happy to greet people and other dogs along the way. Oscar gets along well with most of the other dogs, but his puppy playfulness is a bit annoying to the older dog in the foster home and it can trigger some small quarrels. Any future dog siblings will need to be able to tolerate his desire to be in charge or to try and dominate at times. Because Oscar can get a little excited and has some mouth playing habits, we recommend him for a home with older, dog-savvy children or just adults. He already has good recall and he is good at sit and down commands when he arrived. This little boy was just neutered so he has some marking habits which sometimes happen inside, but overall he has been very good with house training and marks less as his hormones subside. He is up to date on all shots, but he did test positive for Lyme disease and we have him started on a month-long course of antibiotics. He is not showing any Lyme symptoms and it is likely something to be manageable if the new owner keeps up with regular vet visits and testing. Oscar is a little underweight and will need continued good food to improve his weight and his coat, which is just a little coarse right now. He eats well and shows no food aggression with other dogs. Oscar is not a grouch…he is a lover and wants a home with lots of love and play.
