**Flora is currently being fostered in Houston. Her adoption will be out-of-state, which means, unfortunately, meeting her prior to her adoption will not be possible. Her adoption donation is $500, which covers her flight, a new kennel, and of course she is fully vetted. Because flights are so expensive, the adoption fee is non-negotiable.**
Flora’s rescue and entry into our lives was a bit dramatic. We had been at the shelter to rescue a medical case one day and were told about a female dog that had been found with what the shelter staff presumed to be concrete on her face. We took one look at her mangled, bleeding face and knew instantly that we had to make space for her. To be honest, she was in such bad shape, we didn’t know if she would survive, but knew we had to do what we could for her. Even if that just meant comfort her and help her pass in peace.
We rushed her to the vet, where we figured out that she didn’t have concrete on her face, someone had intentionally covered her face in Gorilla glue, she had punctures on her legs that were also filled with glue, she had had glue put into her right eye, and to top it all off, she had been shot and the bullet had ripped through her ACL. But, she was happy, friendly, and eager to give and receive love, so we set about getting her fixed up! (You can find photos of Flora’s “before” on our Facebook page).
Flora healed like she had magical regenerating powers! Just two weeks out from the surgery to repair her knee and the vet said she had made about four weeks’ worth of progress. The hardest part of her healing was keeping her down so her face and leg could heal. When new people meet her, they have a hard time believing that she is the same girl we found who was missing half the skin on her face and count barely walk. She only has a tiny scar on her nose from her facial injuries.
She does have some residual vision loss from the glue in her eye, but it does not impair her. She likes to run and play, but would likely not be a good candidate for someone wanting a running partner. She is good for walks, but extended exercise may cause her leg to become sore.
Flora is estimated to be about 2 years old, she is 50 pounds, and likely a mix of hound/lab/ and possibly some Staffordshire. She is a squatty girl, not very tall, and would be the perfect sized companion for either a house with a yard or a condo/apartment setting. Flora’s very favorite thing to do is to love her family. She greets her fosters every morning with a kiss (in payment for a good bottom scratch) and loves to sunbathe, go for walks, and ride in the car.
Flora is excellent with other dogs and loves to play zoom with her foster siblings. Because she can be a bit rambunctious, she would be best paired with a dog roughly her size (could be a touch smaller, but no Chihuahuas!). She would likely not be the best mate for a kitty friend as she is a tiny bit curious of them and would likely chase.
Unfortunately, as Flora was clearly not cared for in her former situation, she is heartworm positive. This is very common in the South and can be easily treated with a protocol of heartworm prevention medication and antibiotics every three months. While this is not the method that all people prefer, we have had great success with it killing the heartworms and not putting our dogs through unnecessary pain. We will provide the medications necessary to complete her treatment protocol and are more than happy to answer any questions about it.
Flora has been fully vetted, spay, vaccinations, deworming, and microchipped. She is ready to leave us and find get started on her forever life.
