My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Poor Blaze has had a really rough start in his young life. He was adopted as a cute, cuddly puppy but once he grew and got too big, he was banished to the backyard and not let inside the home where he belonged. In fact, the reason we got him led to the second time he was let down by humans. A plea went out to help him over Facebook since he was stuck out in the elements the weekend we had that extreme cold snap where the temps dipped below zero. Even with the bitter cold, his "family" refused to give him refuge inside and left him out to deal with that bitter chill all alone. We found out from a neighbor that he was also left outside to fend for himself during the January blizzard that blanketed the area with almost 30 inches of snow! A foster person indicated that she would like to help him so I agreed to take him into our rescue with the stipulation that she HAD to keep him since I had no other place to put him. Well lo & behold after she took in all the accolades for "saving" this guy from such inhumane conditions, I got a call early the next morning saying she no longer wanted him in her home and he was being dumped (for a second time in less than 12 hours). I had no choice but to squeeze him in my house where I discovered that Blaze is a very friendly, playful & fun boy who just didn't know yet how to be a pet.

Blaze, who I nicknamed Balooka for his clumsy shenanigans turned out to be a super dog. Yes, it took a little work to turn him around and let him see that not all people are as cruel as the 2 "homes" that gave up on him. He LOVES other dogs and can play with them for hours. He is virtually bomb-proof, you can do anything to & with him and he will respond with a silly, happy grin. Blaze is just under a year old and weighs in around 75 pounds (and he's not yet fully grown). He is a big guy and he loves to cuddle so be prepared for a big ol bag of muscle & bones to plop down in your lap like he's a toy poodle. He is very affectionate and just wants to always be by your side. He does not like going outside unless it's with me or the other dogs. This is understandable being that such a social dog was left alone in total solitude for the first 10 months of his life. He was a little tough to crate train . again, that was to be expected since he just wants to make sure he isn't left alone anymore. But he now goes in willingly - as long as you toss a cookie in there to entice him to run after it. Blaze is up to date now with his shots, neutered and microchipped. He has had a lot of disappointment in his life - first from a family that took him in and had no clue what owning a dog entails...then by a foster home who should have known better but let the dog down anyway. I am determined not to let that happen again so please make sure you are ready to welcome a large boy into your home and have the time and patience to help him work out what it means to be a cherished family companion. Blaze/Balooka will pay you back with oodles of love and loyalty. All he asks is that you find a place for him in your heart....and you make sure he stays there!
