ADOPTED ON 04-16-16 - Just when you think you’ve heard the most shocking story of animal cruelty, another story takes its place. Placed in a bucket and abandoned in someone’s backyard, little Cruz and his sister Lakee was unable to escape his “prison”, and the fear he must have felt when it began raining breaks your heart. As the water began collecting in the bucket this little pup was finally found, standing in several inches of water crying, trying desperately to get out. This poor baby was just shy of 12 weeks old. No one knows how long he was there, but he was terrified and hungry, and surely on his way to being drowned. How anyone could possibly be this cruel is incomprehensible.
Fortunately there are also wonderful, caring human beings who are willing to step in and help and now little Cruz has a full belly and is on the road to recovery. He is a gorgeous, 10 pound black Flat Coat Retriever, a ball of furry cuteness and, despite his terrifying experience, is the sweetest natured puppy you’ll ever meet. Cruz has an open loving warm heart, he loves to be with his family at night. He is a very good boy. One look at those eyes and you’ll fall in love. Cruz so deserves a loving family who will love and protect him so that he will never feel the fear he did that day. He is playful and loves to be cuddled. A warm bed and warm arms to hold him are exactly what little Cruz needs. Another home with a dog would be best for Cruz. It would be good if Lakee and Cruz were adopted together. Will you open your home to him and welcome him into your family?
ABOUT THE BREED
At first glance, you might think the Flat-Coated Retriever resembles a black or brown Golden Retriever, but no such thing. He's a distinctive breed, his early popularity, which peaked before World War I, was eclipsed by that of the Golden and Labrador Retrievers, but his fans think that's for the best, preferring to keep the secret of his fun-loving yet hard-working nature to themselves.’
This is a breed named for its coat, so let’s begin there. The lustrous, flat-lying coat comes in solid black or liver, with feathering at the legs and tail. Beautiful, yes, but also highly functional: it protects these superb retrievers from harsh weather, icy water, and punishing ground cover. Another breed hallmark is the long head—unique among retrievers—that projects a smart and kindly expression. Flat-Coats will stand just as tall as a Lab, but in silhouette they present a leaner, more elegant look.
PET COMPATIBILITY
Tolerant and friendly, Flat-Coats love everyone, including children and other dogs. They'll bark to let you know that someone's approaching, but don't count on them to serve as any kind of guard dog. Flat-Coats enjoy the company of other dogs and can learn to get along with cats, especially if they're raised with them. They might be a little too fond of pet birds, if you know what we mean.
CHILDREN
Flat-Coats are great friends for active older children. They'll play for hours, whether that involves running, swimming, or chasing a ball. They can be overwhelming for toddlers, however, accidentally knocking them over with one whack of that ever-wagging tail.
Always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any biting or ear or tail pulling on the part of either party. Teach your child never to approach any dog while he's sleeping or eating or to try to take the dog's food away. No dog should ever be left unsupervised with a child.
TEMPERAMENT
If you like playing fetch (and, especially if you like playing it for hours), you’ll love having a Flat Coat Retriever. Eager, loving, intelligent and playful, these dogs have boundless energy and very few behavior problems.
The Flat-Coat demonstrates stability and a desire to please with a confident, optimistic, and outgoing attitude characterized by a wagging tail. Flat-Coats are often called the "Peter Pan" of retrievers. They generally mature more slowly than other dogs and maintain their puppy like exuberance for years. This playful energy makes them a wonderful and entertaining companion, but it also means extra time and patience when training them. While they are eager to please, Flat-Coats are hams, and they won't hesitate to go for a laugh, even if it means ignoring or disobeying you. In general, however, he's a responsive and sensitive student. A harsh correction will cause him to shut down until you make amends.
PERSONALITY
The Flat-Coated Retriever is an eternal puppy, brimming with happiness and energy. They adore people and will greet everyone they meet as if that person were their best friend (which makes them lousy guard dogs. After a day of playing with the kids in the back, the Flat-Coated Retriever will turn into a lapdog – don't be surprised if you find him sleeping in bed under the covers. Though this breed is friendly and social and gets along well with other household pets, their extended puppyhood and constant energy can make them a challenge for first time dog owners.
IMPORTANT POINTS ABOUT PACK LEADERS
It is a natural instinct for a dog to have an order in its pack. When we humans live with dogs, we become their pack. The entire pack cooperates under a single leader. Lines are clearly defined and rules are set. Because a dog communicates his displeasure with growling and eventually biting, all other humans MUST be higher up in the order than the dog. The humans must be the ones making the decisions, not the dogs. That is the only way your relationship with your dog can be a complete success.
HOUSETRAINING
It is recommended to feed your dog on a regular schedule. Then you need to find your dog’s schedule so that you can work with that. Start by taking the dog out every two hours, if the dog goes the second time, then take the dog out every four hours. Do that for one or two days; then move to six hours but limit water after the morning feeding and take the dish up. Continue with six hours, if you need to move to eight hours, then we recommend that you remove the water dish after the first feeding in the morning and the night feeding. Before your last walk for the night, put the water dish down two hours before the walk. There will might be days where that might be an exception for water, however, keeping a schedule for water, will help.
The biggest problem is once a dog has had one accident in the house, there is a urine smell that the dog detects and his instinct to continue mark where he smells urine. This is how wild dogs let other dogs know that this territory is taken and for dogs not in the pack to go elsewhere. If you keep the house clean and pour some urine outside where you want him to go and then praise him when he marks there you will find house-breaking goes very easily.

We owe it to the dogs we rescue and all the wonderful families/adopters who might consider welcoming our charges into their hearts and home. Our dogs are waiting for that ideal forever home where they will be cherished as deserving family members. It's sad these second chances are even necessary for these dogs, but we are committed to them and will devote the time and energy to their rehoming, and not just MOVE them to save more dogs. We diligently and responsibly seek good matches as we don't want to re-home the dog again. These animals have already endured more than they should have, and through no fault of their own. It behooves us to be honest and forthright, and we appreciate the same in return from applicants. It's that winning combination of reciprocal trust and respect that allows for successful placements to be made. Happy adopters translate to happy dogs, and that's our goal!
Our rescue volunteers will be more than honored to be in touch with you directly and promptly, after receiving your application and conducting a mandatory a veterinarian check. Thank you for respecting that we all donate our time to saving these animals, and understand we value your philanthropic and compassionate desire to help be part of the rescue team. That said, you'll understand why we are committed to the well-being of our charges and consider this veterinarian check mandatory. If you are a first-time dog owner, we will work with you every step of the way! ADVOCACY AND EDUCATION ARE AS MUCH A PART OF RESPONSIBLE RESCUE AS ADOPTION! And it takes a RESCUE VILLAGE to help the most dogs possible in a thorough manner to ensure success on all fronts, and then some! It is an awful feeling to fail a dog, and we can't continue rescue if we don't do everything we can to ensure good matches for the dogs and tender families who might adopt them. THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING.
Although we are an extremely small rescue group, we understand and respect your family's eagerness to be in touch and learn as much as you can about the dogs you are considering adopting. Our very experienced and devoted trainer will be happy to share all aspects of OUR RESCUE DOGS to determine compatibility once you've submitted your application, and another of our volunteers will explain the whole process of our rescue and answer any questions you might have as well
