Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Oona is a beautiful 14-month-old, black-and-white, short-haired cat with bright green eyes who needs to live in a one-cat home. She is spayed, microchipped, up-to-date on her vaccines, and perfectly litter-trained.
She was found in a junkyard when she was only about 2 weeks old. Her mother and siblings were dead. She was brought to ATTR and immediately taken home to be fostered by one of our employees because she needed to be syringe-fed every few hours and kept warm. That employee decided to adopt her and has kept her since then, but after a year of trying, Oona has never acclimated to living with her owner’s other cats. She experiences extreme anxiety and acts out aggressively when she sees them, which results in stress for everyone. This means that she has to be separated from the others cats at all times—a very difficult situation for her and her family.
It’s possible that because she never had a mother and siblings to properly socialize her, she just “can’t cat.” It’s also possible that even though she survived in spite of the odds, her traumatic beginnings resulted in some sort of neurological deficit. Her vet prescribed amitriptyline for anxiety which has helped to calm her down, but she still can’t tolerate other cats. We’re not sure how she would do with dogs, but it’s doubtful that she would tolerate them either.
She has exhibited some mild aggression towards her owners in the past, but that has completely disappeared with the use of amitriptyline. She takes 1 pill per day at bedtime.
When she’s away from other cats, Oona is very quiet and just enjoys being near her family. She will follow you into whatever room you’re in and find a comfy spot to nap in or a sunny window to gaze out of, and if you move she’ll follow you. She’s not crazy about being picked up or held, but will tolerate it for a minute or two once in a while before fidgeting to be put down. Her present owner clips her claws every couple of weeks, so she’s used to being handled.
Oona is a bit of a chow-hound and is currently on weight-management food in order to help her lose a pound or two. She’s also a sink-drinker who thinks water in a bowl is boring. If she’s thirsty, she’ll hop up on the sink and nudge the faucet with her nose and paw and look at you until you turn it on for her to happily lap up. She loves to chase soap bubbles when you do dishes, and if a moth or fly gets into the house, it won’t last 30 seconds with Oona on guard! She loves to play with fishing-pole-type toys, and her ideal owner will have time to help her get some “fishing” exercise a few times a day.
If you’ve been thinking about getting a cat, check out Oona’s gorgeous pictures. Her current owners love her and desperately want to find a good home for her where she’ll be loved and well taken care of.
