Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Odin is a two year old fawnequin male with natural ears. He is a big goofy puppy who came into rescue through no fault of his own. He had been living with a loving family who decided they would no longer have time for him since they have a baby on the way. Odin loves to play! He enjoys chasing and chewing on tennis balls (especially the oversized squeaky Kong tennis balls), playing tug-of-war with his rope toys, and play-wrestling with his foster parents. He does however play like a big dog and can be mouthy when he plays. When he’s not playing and zooming around, he is a very sweet dog that gives lots of hugs and kisses. He comes right up to his foster parents and in typical Great Dane fashion, leans on them while they rub his belly. He does have a bit of a happy tail, which seems to be going constantly since he’s usually a very happy boy. He’s still not quite aware of his size and will have to be supervised around children. He does get along with cats and is great with other dogs, though sometimes other critters are intimidated by his size and his enthusiastic method of play. Odin will have a training requirement as part of his adoption.
Odin is a selective eater, but we have found that he does enjoy Taste of the Wild buffalo and venison kibble. He does tend to bark at strange noises and strangers at the door, but once he gets a sniff he quickly reverts back to his sweet self. Overall, he would be a great fit for an active family with all household members over the age of 13. Within a couple weeks Odin will be neutered and have a gastropexy. After he recovers from surgery Odin will be looking for his forever home!
Odin came to MAGDRL in January 2016. (5)
Update 3/14/16
Odin is a big silly puppy who will turn two in May. Odin came back into rescue when one of the dogs in his adoptive home was struggling to accept him as she was working through fear and aggression issues. Odin is a giant goofy pup who loves his people and his playtime. His favorite activities are squeaking any squeaky toy (especially the huge squeaking Kong balls) and playing tug of war. Odin is very clear about when he decides it’s playtime, he will bring his toy of choice over and set it in your lap with very sad eyes that are nearly impossible to ignore! While he is working to learn appropriate play, Odin is very mouthy when he plays. Other dogs have found Odin’s very large size and enthusiastic play style intimidating so Odin is looking for a home that has another very large easy going yet playful dog to be his buddy. In his foster home, Odin is living with two cats. He is never aggressive with them but often chases them trying to get them to play (which they do not appreciate too much!).
Odin is house trained with only an occasional accident when he gets too excited or nervous. While his foster family is at work, Odin stays in a guest room to lounge on his own bed and watches Animal Planet on tv! Odin enjoys meeting new people, he greets them with leans and kisses in typical Great Dane fashion! While we believe Odin will do best with a very large canine sibling, he can be slow to warm up to other dogs, especially if they express nervousness around him.
In his foster home, Odin will soon begin some basic training lessons to help improve his leash walking and work on learning manners. Formal obedience training will be a part of Odin’s adoption contract. Odin is looking for his forever home with no young children, probably no cats and another very large easy going and playful dog. Odin came back to MAGDRL in March 2016.
4/17- In his foster home, Odin has begun working weekly with a trainer. Odin now has strict rules within the house and how he interacts with people. With very persistent and consistent implementation, Odin has greatly improved with appropriate play! He quickly welcomes visitors with his famous Dane leans and kisses. Odin is learning a lot and has made wonderful progress but still has a lot to learn. Leash walking with few distractions is coming along quite nicely. Odin even does well meeting people out on walks! On the other hand, Odin is becoming increasingly dog reactive. Later this week he will be evaluated by a behaviorist because of his increasing reactions to other dogs. Based on his behaviors, we are beginning to believe that Odin would do well as an only dog. He needs a large fenced in yard where he can get his energy out. While Odin is making great progress in his foster home, formal training will still be part of his adoption contract and he will only go to a Dane savvy home.
Update 5/25/2016
Odin is currently at the kennel and is doing great! Odin is a fantastic and loving PUPPY DOG with a LOT of STRONG energy to play. We have discovered that he does indeed like other dogs but that the other dogs need to be able to handle his level of high energy.
He needs a STERN hand and owner to help him understand he can’t POUNCE on his playmates. He also will take advantage of a situation (if allowed) and make the “human” do what he wants by nipping and nudging.
He needs strict guidance that his playful, “mouthy” puppy’s habits are not acceptable to humans or fellow dogs. He is the PERFECT dog for the forever family who wants to train and work with their four legged buddy. He is beautiful, loving and SMART – whoever would take on this well rewarded challenge will get the BEST DOG EVER!!!!!
