My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Cheyenne, a sweet, tiny beagle girl weighing in at just under 18 lbs. Cheyenne has had a rough time of it. She appears to have been mistreated prior to coming to MW BREW. She was found with marks from a shock collar and when she came to her foster home would flatten herself to the floor whenever any of the humans simply stood up. She has come a long way since then but continues to startle VERY easily and will still duck or dart away if there is an unexpected noise or movement. She does not enjoy being picked up and will melt into the ground like a puddle if you need to pick her up. She has bonded with her foster mom though, and is very loving. She will now run to foster mom and give her kisses (this makes foster mom very happy!).
Cheyenne will need a family that is calm and patient with her. Loud voices scare her so all training needs to be done using a calm neutral voice and lots of praise. She very much wants to please and listens well when told “no.” Because of her extreme startle reactions and fears with unpredictable noises and movement, Cheyenne needs to go to a home without young children. She also must have another dog to help her feel comfortable. In her foster home Cheyenne has a foster beagle brother and a foster rat terrier sister and gets along well with both. She loves to get our beagle to chase and wrestle with her. Cheyenne is very playful and will entertain herself tossing toys in the air and chasing them around the house. She LOVES to play, and she LOVES her walks, though she does need some work on loose leash walking.
Cheyenne is totally housetrained, though due to her shyness does not really indicate when she needs to go out. She simply waits for you to let her out. Cheyenne is crate trained as well and sleeps in her crate at night and when her foster family is not home. She goes in willingly and waits happily for her treat.
Cheyenne has also had some serious health problems. When coming to MW BREW she was found to be heartworm positive. She underwent treatment for this and will need to continue to be on year-round heartworm preventive for the rest of her life-just like all dogs should. Cheyenne also was diagnosed with intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), which means that she is prone to disc herniations. Two herniated discs were discovered while she was in foster care and surgery performed on one of them on her back. (The other herniation is in her neck and was deemed mild, has not required treatment at this time.) The surgery was very successful and she currently shows no signs of any problems, running, jumping and playing happily. However, she is at higher risk for recurrence and the neurosurgeon has indicated that Cheyenne should not jump on and off furniture and should not go up and down stairs, including the porch step. In her foster home we have rigged a temporary ramp using boards placed from our porch step to the sidewalk. Her forever home will need to have no stairs, or stairs blocked off. Also because of this she should not be put on a tie-out since if she tries to take off running the tie-out can jerk her back forcefully and this may cause injury to her.

Cheyenne’s requirements:
Another playful dog roughly her size
A calm, quiet home without young children
Ideally, a fenced-in yard (or possibly frequent walks for potty breaks plus trips to a dog park so that she can run and play)
A house without stairs and willing to be diligent about keeping her from jumping on and off furniture.
A family with experience working with shy and fearful dogs, who can be patient as Cheyenne slowly blossoms into the happy, playful and loving dog that she is inside
If you think Cheyenne is the girl for you, please contact MW BREW for more information
