Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Max! Max Roly Poly shihtzu, is about 8 years old and about 20lbs. Max was surrendered to a high kill shelter by his owners because they said he had liver disease and he couldn’t walk. Max was so cute that we pulled him from the shelter to see if there was anything we could do for him. Well, Max does NOT have liver failure. We got a full senior blood panel and radiographs done for Max. Max’s organs are healthy and he does have slight hip dysplasia which for small breed dogs is not something that is normally corrected. Max’s biggest problem was that he was 6lbs overweight, and THAT’s why he had a hard time walking. Max has lost about 1.5lbs since we have had him and he is already walking much better. He really needs to be about 15lbs for his optimum health. Max gets around very well in fact, at meal times he RUNS for his food. We started calling him Roly Poly because when he is happy or after his meals, he rolls onto his back and rolls back and forth and back and forth. We must admit it is just darling. Max has a stubborn streak, though. He doesn’t like to go outside in the rain to go potty and we sometimes catch him in a deep squat relieving himself. It appears that he cannot lift his leg as most male dogs do so he squats with one leg stretched out and he is so close to the floor that it is almost unreal. He would be really good playing limbo because he can get crazy low! He has dry eyes and needs some optimmune applied into his eyes once in a while. His dry eye is not the worst we have seen and he does pretty well occasional medication. He doesn’t like it, though and that’s another occasion when he shows his stubborn streak. This little chunky monkey is well worth the stubbornness because he will make you laugh with his comical roly poly antics. It does make one wonder how he can move so slow except when he hears his food bowl being filled up. Is he faking it? It’s a very sad thing that his former owners gave up on him and assumed his fat belly was due to liver issues without having him tested. That almost cost him his life. We adore Roly Poly and we think you will too. Roly Poly is a kicked back dog and he doesn’t have any issues with being left alone. He is not destructive or nervous. He would benefit from short walks until he can lose more weight or even swim therapy to help him lose weight. He will need regular flea control and regular grooming. He does very well at the groomer and at the vet. He gets along well with other dogs and cats. He isn’t much for toys and playing but give him a fluffy bed and he will definitely claim it. Max is neutered, up to date on all vaccinations including rabies, and is microchipped. He has even had a dental cleaning and had a few extractions so a daily dental chew will help keep his mouth healthy. For an application to adopt Max Roly Poly, please email stmartinsanimalrescue@hotmail.com. Max’s adoption fee is $150.00.
