My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet, Merry, who was a bit of a Christmas Miracle. She came to us just a week before Christmas, badly in need of rescue. She was severely anemic, severely malnourished, and severely in need of love. She had torn a horrible gash in the back of her neck, which was on the mend but needed tending to. She saw the vet, who determined that she is at least partially blind, but is able to follow movement and voices, and probably can discern light and shadows as well, so you might not even realize she has impaired vision, because she gets around without much difficulty -- she has a great sense of her surroundings, and doesn't go knocking into things. She can jump up and down off of a chair, so we know that climbing isn't affected by her impaired vision, and she knows exactly where her litter box and food and water are.

She is labeled "special needs" due to her compromised vision, but also because she has an intestinal problem we can't really fix at the shelter. Merry has had multiple blood tests, multiple fecal tests, an intestinal test and an ultrasound, involving both our local vet and a specialist, and none of these tests show any problems with her health, not since she finished her first round of antibiotics to address her anemia. She will have normal stool one day, soft stool the next, and perhaps diarrhea the day after, and then normal stool again. After all these tests with no concrete diagnosis, we are experimenting with different foods for her, gradually eliminating certain ingredients to help us hone in on what will be best for her.

But we have to admit, the shelter has been depressing for this very affectionate and sweet cat. She had no bowel problems while she was in foster care for a month, so perhaps the stress of living at the shelter is contributing to her digestive problems. Though she doesn't seem to have a problem living with other cats, she is starting to stay in her cage more, not venturing out -- we have to recognize that with her impaired vision, it just might be too much stress for this gentle cat to have to adjust to new cat personalities over and over again. It is breaking our hearts to see this wonderful cat act like she's given up on ever being truly loved or finding a real home.

Try as we might, we cannot give her as much affection as she would like, because we have a lot of other animals to care for. But she IS very affectionate, and especially, more than anything, loves to just lie on a lap and occasionally be brushed. She will sit quietly on your lap for an hour if you let her!

Because of her impaired vision, it's best if she goes to a home with no dogs and no small children. She doesn't quarrel with the other cats and might be fine living with one or two, provided they are older, more laid back cats like her. Though she's got some Siamese in her, she's a very quiet cat, not at all vocal. We believe Merry would make an outstanding, loving companion to an elder person.

We had not made her available while she was going through all her medical tests and test diets, but now we are hoping to find someone to just give her a home and love, where we hope her digestive problems subside, once she is no longer caged, because we are stymied as to what else to do for her. The best thing we can do for her is find her a home, and say goodbye to this sweetie.

Merry is estimated to be 8 years old, is box-trained, spayed, current on vaccinations, and tested negative for FIV and feline leukemia.
