Here's what the humans have to say about me:
1/26/16 Peanut Updated bio. Peanut is 10 years old. A sweet little 6 pound Yorkie-poo. Peanut is being fostered in Riverview, FL.
It's Peanut here! Boy do I have some news! Over the past week I've was doing really great, eating a lot, relaxing and trying to kick the doggy cold and I did. So this week, I thought it would be smooth sailing, until foster mom saw something strange and the vet checked me out and said I had worms, YUCK! That's probably why I've been eating and eating but haven't gained any weight! Well, they got me new medication to take care of those nasty buggers and I'm already feeling better. After this week I should be done with all of my medicines, and I'll get my new blood work and hopefully everything looks great.
But, if you thought that sounds promising, just wait till you hear what the heart "dogtor" told me today! He checked me out with machines and images and determined that I only have a mild enlarged heart with a murmur, which is nothing of major concern. In fact, I don't need any medicine to address the heart, that I'm doing good on my own and I am strong enough to undergo surgery on my mouth (and get a neuter). I'm so happy, I'm doing a happy dance, because I really want my mouth to get cleaned up and feeling better soon so I can be adopted. And I'm really glad that there's nothing worse going on so my future family can just focus on me. I really have overcome a lot of hurdles and I'm feeling hopeful for the future.
I am a sweet guy, a little quirky, but I have love to give and a life to live. I don't ask much of anyone, just give me a warm blanket, soft bed, and tasty treats and I'm happy! I like to follow my person around and see what you humans are doing around the house. I also enjoy going for walks and feeling the warm sun and smelling fresh air. My foster mom says I'm easy to please. I guess after what I went through in my life, my expectations are low.... but, I hope that I find a forever home to raise my expectations and give me lots of love!! Do you think you have it in your heart to make this older fella' a part of your home? I hope so! Please click that button and apply to adopt me. You won't regret it!
1/15/16 UPDATE ON PEANUT! Peanut is a 10 year old, 6-pound yorkie mix (maybe Yorkie-poo), being fostered in Riverview, FL
GOOD NEWS! Peanut's follow-up visit with the vet went well. His blood work showed significant improvement in just a week with his anemia almost to normal levels!! Based on that, Peanut was ready to sit for an X-ray to view his internal organs and explore the heart murmur and bowel concerns. Peanut's heart looked enlarged but stable and a radiologist confirmed that he is not in heart failure.
Actually his murmur was downgraded to a 3/6, which is better than initially suspected! Also, his bowels looked fine, there was no obvious mass or hernia. It was possible that he was extremely constipated when he was first examined at the shelter (per the shelter notes.) There may be some muscle weakness in the bowel area, but there is nothing that requires follow-up or surgery and nothing that even seems to be uncomfortable for him! Woohoo!!!!
At this point, Peanut is taking more time on his medications before another recheck on his blood work, aiming for all levels to look normal. We are also sending Peanut to a cardiologist in two weeks, to confirm that he is strong enough to undergo the anesthesia and survive the oral surgery that he desperately needs. If we get the green light from the cardiologist, we hope to have him in surgery a few days later. The oral surgery would repair a suspected oral fistula and also extract any (many) decayed teeth that are causing him discomfort, and a high white blood count. We are committed to getting Peanut to a healthier state. This poor guy has been through so much that we don't know about in the past and was so neglected. Sadly we learned from the X-rays that at some point he had broken his back, but the fractures healed over a year ago. We have no clue what could've happened to him, but can only imagine that he never received the care and treatment he would have need to ease the injury and his pain.
Peanut wants to let you know not to feel sorry for him though, because he has hope now that UYR is helping him. And, every day he is getting stronger and perkier! He is such a sweet, quirky, quiet guy and he is happy to have a warm bed, soft bedding, love, and a full tummy! Everything else with his health will hopefully come in time!
If you are interested in considering Peanut, he is not ready for adoption yet, but please feel free to submit an application for consideration. He is nothing but loving and would be a wonderful (calm) addition to a caring household, with no young children, please.
Getting Peanut healthy will cost UYR quite a bit of money. Please consider donating to his care. Peanut has had a lot of hurt both physically and emotionally in his past. Let’s not let him down again.
1/12/16 Peanut is a 10 year old sweet fellow. We think he is a yorkie-poo. He is only 6 pounds. Peanut is being fostered in Riverview, FL.
Peanut has had a busy few days. Foster mom got him from the shelter last Thursday and he was extremely lethargic and seemed very depressed. We were told by the shelter vet that he was underweight and had a possible respiratory infection, as well as a possible hernia and a heart murmur, so it wasn't a surprise that he seemed so flat. Needless to say, we knew we had our work cut out for us, so the day after he arrived in his foster home, we went to the vet. There he got full blood work which showed that for the most part he was stable, but that he was very anemic (probably from a poor diet) and had high white blood cells (probably from the respiratory infection and poor dental hygiene) and the vet seemed to think that the suspected hernia may be some other obstruction in his bowels, like a polyp or mass, but that it could wait for further evaluation. Since that vet visit Peanut has been on iron and vitamin supplements, and he's a week into the medicine for his respiratory sniffles and overall is doing much, much better. We are hoping to get Peanut to a stable point where we can address his dental concerns immediately to rid his body of extra bacteria and neuter him at the same time, then we will start to look at the concern with his bowel. A return vet visit is scheduled for Thursday, please stay tuned!
In spite of being a stray, who was clearly wandering for a very long time, Peanut is a great pup! He has been fully vaccinated and is heartworm negative. He hears loud noises and sees pretty well, in fact has become attached to foster mom and likes to go for walks with her, like her shadow! He also loves to cuddle on her lap. He is a really chill guy! But, he's also a fighter in that over the past few days his appetite has improved significantly, his sniffles are lessening and he has a little bounce in his step and seems to be a little more alert and happy. He's a doll and easy to please. For the most part he sleeps all day in his bed and we wake him up to take him outside periodically and of course share treats with him, which he loves! He is crate trained, potty trained, and also wee pad trained for any overnight urges. He is a very quiet guy who's really only barked at the vet, but otherwise, he's content at home snuggling in his bed. If you think Peanut is the type of couch potato, lap-dog that you'd like to add to your home, please keep him in mind! He is not ready for adoption yet, but as soon as we do know more about his medical needs, we will update and hopefully he will be ready for a loving forever home soon!
Initial bio 1-7-16 Meet peanut! He's approximately 10 years old and 6 too thin pounds. This little Yorkie boy is being fostered in Riverview, FL.
Peanut may be hearing impaired (may hear loud sounds) and have limited vision, but we believe he can see. He is severely underweight. He has been sneezing and may have an upper respiratory infection or just nasal infection from poor dental hygiene. It is possible he has a hernia and a possible grade 4/6 heart murmur.
Peanut's foster mom is taking him to the vet and we will know much more.
Peanut is a sweet older fella. Peanut is extremely gentle and loving and very calm. He is just about skin and bones. His eyes were matted shut, so he was initially thought to be blind, but he's not. His hair has been cut back and he will eventually get a full groom, when he's not so weak. He will be visiting the vet very soon to address his weight and caloric intake and get an overall check up. Fortunately, he's heartworm negative and has gotten his vaccines! Say a couple prayers for this guy. Please!
Peanut will need a home with someone who will give him a warm lap, a warm home, good food, and the love he has been looking for for such a long time. We hope someone will open their heart and their home to this very sweet, little fellow.
