My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Penny is approximately 2 years old and 19 lbs. We believe she grew up in someone's backyard without much socialization. Then when the family abandoned the home, they also abandoned her right there in the backyard with no way to fend for herself. Luckily the neighbors were able to help get her to rescue.

Penny craves human attention and affection. She loves nothing more than to sit with you or run and play with you. She does OK with dogs smaller than her, but is fearful of dogs bigger than her. She plays very rough with dogs smaller than her so she would need a pretty sturdy companion. The best choice of a home would be where she can be an only dog, but would be OK with a smaller, playful dog that plays as rough as she does.

When Penny first came into rescue, it took a few days for her to accept her new people. Once she came to know that they were going to treat her well and that she was part of the crew, she blossomed! She is not just about the most affectionate dog in the house. But it took time and patience over the first few weeks for her to come around fully. A new home can expect a slow introduction.

She is also shy with new people. As long as she is with 'her people', she is very shy, but no where near as scared when she's by herself meeting new people for the first time. Due to her shyness, we recommend a home with no children (teens that are dog savvy are OK).

Penny is petrified of new places. She will not be a dog that will want to go everywhere and meet everyone. She will want to stay home and have a relatively stable household.

Penny will need a fenced in yard as she loves to run and play. She is going to be a low maintenance girl because she will not want to go beyond her home area (e.g. to the dog park, for walks etc).

Penny is an unbelievable loving girl, but a new family will have to be patient before they see that side of her. If given a chance, Penny will make a great family companion.

Penny's adoption has been partially sponsored, therefore the adoption fee is $125.

Please email for an adoption application (Microsoft Word format).

Prior to adoptions, all dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated (age appropriate), heartworm tested, microchipped and are kept up to date on flea/tick and heartworm preventative.

SOMAD is a private, all volunteer, foster-home based rescue group. Please be patient as we answer your inquiries; we do our best to answer emails within a day, however volume and regular life schedules sometimes delay us.
