My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

*Peyton is currently living in Houston and is available for local or out-of-town adoption to an amazing family.*

Peyton is estimated at 3 years old and he is a gorgeous 55 pound Shepherd mix with the most amazing symmetrical black and tan markings. His cute, tan eyebrows are shaped like Cheetos and they catch everyone’s attention! He is an active dog with a happy disposition, a great attitude and a love for adventure and fun. He enjoys playing at doggy day care and socializing with all of his dog friends! Peyton came to our rescue group off the streets of Houston, so not much is known about his life before his rescue day, but we can tell you after he was saved, we have found him to be an amazing dog and will be a perfect companion dog for his new family.
Peyton really likes to be petted and stays at his human’s feet while getting lots of love. If he were given the chance, he’d also take to being a couch buddy in the evenings too. During his breaks out in the play yard or during his training session, he curls up to you to be petted and give kisses, if you like them of course. Belly rubs are a must for this guy and he will let his friends roll him over if he’s not already one step ahead of you. Peyton has been attending socialization classes at K-9 Heeler and has done really well meeting new friends and playing with the other visitors. Peyton has been living in a boarding-type facility for nearly a year now, so we hope that his new family will provide him the structure and time it may take him to adjust to having a real family. Volunteers work with him often and he gets plenty of love, but he deserves a real family and home of his own.

He plays well with a variety of other dogs and has fun. He’s gets along well with all of them and would be fine in a family as the second dog or he would also thrive as the top dog in the house. Although he has doggy friends in his life and meets new ones easily…his real love is playing ball with his human. He hasn’t been around many cats since his rescue, but the ones that he has been around that are calm, he ignores. If the cat runs, he is interested and will chase it, but has proven to be easily redirected by his trainer. He would just need to get to know a new cat slowly and cautiously before being left unattended together. He entertains himself in the yard occasionally by chasing squirrels too, so we think it’s a playful activity for him, not a malicious one.

The ideal family for Peyton is active, enjoys spending time outdoors doing fun activities and will include this active boy in all of their adventures. Peyton would do best in a home with older children or teenagers as he does have a tendency to resource guard his food bowl. While this is not uncommon for dogs who have lived on the streets, we want to be sure the children in the home are old enough to understand that he needs to be given proper time and space to eat his meals. Once you have given Peyton his food in a bowl, you cannot touch the food bowl. This is not the case with his toys, as he freely shares those with anyone that is playing with him. Peyton has been working on this issue with his trainer and has made significant progress, yet you will always have to be aware of and manage it to keep the members of the family safe. We would like to share his trainer’s advice and feedback with his new family to ensure that the training continues after his adoption.
Peyton is an awesome ball player. He loves to chase the ball, retrieve it, bring it back and place it right back at your feet to throw it again. He’d love someone that enjoys playing as much as he does. He also is really impressive with catching balls that are bounced nearby him. He rarely misses it! He enjoys playing with other toys like the ropes and such, but the tennis ball is his #1. The cutest thing Peyton does is gives a look when he returns a ball to his friend and if it’s not thrown quickly enough, he picks it up and drops it at your feet again as if to say C’mon already!
Peyton’s ideal family is an active group that will consistently take him for walks or jogs, play ball with him and give him loads of love. He is still a young dog and needs daily activity to keep his mind and body engaged. He’s not all action though. He would also love to hang out and watch the game with you on TV. He’s best with adults and older kids, a yard would be a dream for him and visits to the park, the pet store and he won’t put up a fight if you want to take him on vacation too.

This great fella is not only good looking, but smart too. He knows basic commands and then some, such as SIT, DOWN, STAY, WAIT, LEAVE IT, BRING IT and TAKE IT. His focus is fantastic as is his recall ability. He walks nicely on a leash, with an occasional pull if a fast cat or squirrel comes into his sights. He would make a great jogging partner too with a bit of practice and building up to longer distances. He is so funny when getting into the car because now he knows we are going somewhere fun so he hops right in and typically lays down in the back seat for the ride.

Peyton is a very intelligent and affectionate dog. He loves to spend time with his friends, both furry and not. Everyone who sees him there says he is an awesome dog and will make someone a great pet. Peyton is neutered, current on all of his vaccinations and microchipped. He is also house trained, crate trained and knows several commands. He is a very healthy and robust dog just waiting to share his zest for life with his new people. Peyton has waited a long time for his family to come along, so we are excited to finally introduce him and hopefully find a perfect family for him to provide the love and security he deserves. He will return this love with every ounce of his being too.
