My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi hi hi everybody! My name is Dudley and I am a three year old mini smooth coat weighing in at about 8lbs – but my foster ma says I could use to gain a pound or two! I am a happy go lucky guy, I love following my foster mom around the house, and she calls me her little ghost. I really really really love snuggling up on the couch; I tuck in close my eyes and boom I am asleep. I will follow the other dogs around, and sometimes bark when they bark, but I am not very noisy for a dachshund. I love my food, but hey who doesn’t. You will have to keep an eye on me until all the other dogs have finished eating or I might jump in and steal some! I am doing super well with my housetraining, only once accident since I arrived – geesh, it’s not that crazy that I do my business outside!

Did I mention I love to snuggle? Foster ma says I am so good at it that I am allowed to sleep in the big bed … hehehe, I won her over with my charm and good looks!

And now a word from my foster mom:

Dudley is a double dapple, mostly white coat with brown markings on his ears and one brown spot on his back!

What is a dapple? Dapple is a coat pattern; you might have a red dapple with some white dappling or darker red dappling. A double dapple is the result of breeding two dapples together. The resulting genetic outcome see's both the mom and dad's dapple gene passed onto the puppy. Essentially the dapple from the mom overwrites the dapple gene from the dad and you get the non-symmetrical pattering (one coloured leg and one white) and a large amount of white in the coat. You will also see a blue eye or a partial blue eye.

While the coat outcome may appear beautiful the other possible defects include dogs being born without eyes or ears, or being born deaf, or being born with an underdeveloped eye(s), or being born blind or any combination thereof. Responsible breeders will carefully identify their dogs and pups as dapples and would never breed two of the same together!

A double dapple is not to be confused with a piebald, which is a normal dachshund colour with varying amounts of white. One of the main differences will be the symmetry of the markings, such as if one ear is brown the other ear will be brown and so on.

Dudley has great vision and seems to hear quite a bit, we are still trying to work out just how much. He is a great little guy, loves the other dogs in the house and especially loves his people. He has adapted to our home without an issue. He has been crated overnight and allowed lose. He crates overnight very well, but also sleeps with us very well, not moving much until we wake him up. He loves going for walks, and is learning some leash manners. Gets along great with other dogs, but has not yet been cat or kid tested. I think a home with responsible children over the age of 12 would be great for Dudley.

Dudley is a real charmer and will be a great addition to any family.
