My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Jose is a five year old, 15 lb, black and tan long hair with a lot of love to give!

Jose came to us from a Kansas puppy mill.  He is super submissive and timid by nature, but if you give him time to get to know you he will share some of that wonderful doxie love.

Jose had a rough start to life and did not receive the best care; due to this lack of care he has lost most of teeth.  This doesn't bother him though; in fact since his dental he seems happier to give kisses.  Jose came into foster with his mill brother Hank.  Jose seems to rely a lot on Hank and it is a must that he goes to a home with another canine companion.

Jose has been with us for almost a month and has begun to come out of his shell this last week or so.  When he first came to us, he would bark at us when we came into the room, or at strange noises.  He now recognizes us and will often come over to say hi!  That being said he is still shy of sudden movements, especially hands coming down to pick him up.  He does better when I sit on the floor and let him come to me.  He has figured out that the couch is a great place to snuggle and just lately has come to realize that the big bed would offer the same snuggle factor as the couch.  He will bark when nervous or at unknown noises, or when our dogs get him going.  I have noticed that as time goes on he is actually barking less.

Jose was crated at night when he first arrived, but has recently graduated to the big bed.  He sleeps through the night without a peep, happily snuggled into one of our fur kids or one of us!  He is x-penned in a safe zone when we have to leave him for an extended period of time.  When we are home his favorite spot is curled up on the couch, tucked into one of us or splaying his belly to the world on his back!

House training is a work in progress; Jose seems to do well on a set schedule and will not have accidents in his crate.  He doesn't really have a tell yet, but I have noticed that he will walk to the slider door from time to time.  Leash work is also a work in progress, given his timid nature, the outside world of cars, kids and a lot of activity seems to overwhelm him quickly.  He does better on his walks with another dog.  It will take some time and patience to work him through his nervousness.  Short outings, or even sitting the park watch life go by will get him used to the outside world.

He has shown no resource guarding, gets along with our three fur kids and is a sweet and handsome all around loveable guy.  Jose needs a home without small children, they just move to quickly for him, but has done great with respectful older children (12 and over).

Jose is looking for that special family to call his own - could that be you?
