My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Greetings! My name is Ginger and I'm a 2 year old, red smooth miniature dachshund. I am spayed and up-to-date on all of my shots. Even though I am very young I have had so many horrible experiences at the hands of cruel people. I can’t even tell you all the things that happened because I am doing my best to forget them and get on with my life!  I arrived in another rescue last year but they were not dachshund savvy so they decided to let CDR try to help me. Boy, that was my lucky day and the best thing ever; my life is getting better all the time!!

I now understand what it means to be a loved member of a family!

I have 4 dachshund brothers that are helping me to learn the ropes. I was afraid of everyone and everything when I first came here but gradually that is changing. I will always be very cautious but with patience, love and encouragement I am improving. Now that the weather is nice I even run and play with my brothers in the backyard. I have learned about walks and think they are great and I go to the park everyday with my brothers. I have a favourite chair with a nice soft blanket and I like to hide under the blanket because nobody can see me then but I do peek out once in a while to see what is going on. I will never be a happy go lucky dog but that doesn't mean I am any less deserving of a loving family of my very own. Truthfully I am the definition of a 'rescued' dog and unfortunately a victim of the hate that exists in this world. If you’re looking for a high energy party animal then I’m not your girl but if you’re looking for a quiet friend who will sit by your side (under my blanket, of course!) then I’m the one for you. I promise I will be the most appreciative dachshund you've ever met if you decide to open up your heart and home to me, Ginger. I’ll let my foster mom take over now.

When Ginger first came to us she shunned almost all contact and touching her to comfort her was not possible. It was heartbreaking at the beginning but over time the improvements I have seen in her have been heartwarming. She will always be shy and timid but for the right person in the right home she will be the best doggie friend you could ever have. She is potty trained although there has been an occasional accident when I missed her signal to take her out. Ginger is fearful of loud noises and sudden moves. Ginger does very well with other dachshunds and it is a MUST that she be placed in a home where there is another small canine companion. The home should not have children and there should be a fenced yard. I think she would be fine in an apartment and I do crate her when I go out. I think she would be okay with cats
